How Can an Entrepreneur Mindset Help You Overcome Fear of People Stealing Your Ideas?
Here are some statements I have actually heard from people. Do you notice any mindset issues?
“I don’t want to put anything about my book, because I’m afraid people will steal my idea,” she said.
Seriously, you think nobody else will ever write a book about the same thing or with a similar storyline? Think of Romeo and Juliet and it’s modern counterpart West Side Story. Consider all the love stories and overcoming challenge stories.
“Oh no! I see someone else wrote a book about the same thing I am writing about.”
NO – really? Of course there is. I’ve never witnessed books fighting upon the shelves or on a Kindle; have you?
“Why would I buy a book about making cookies when there are all sorts of free recipes and videos?”
Um, well, perhaps because there are hundreds of thousands of cookbooks that people pay for all day long. Why should any author feel badly for contributing one more?
Every author is also an entrepreneur mindset is KEY!
No matter what you write, thinking like an entrepreneur is key. It’s not just about writing to share talent or express artistic sensibilities. It’s about reaching an audience hungry for the type of work an author creates.
And there is truly no need to worry about ideas being stolen.
A friend of mine felt worried for me because I had used a similar concept to a published story by a famous fantasy author. I had a very animated tree in a story I’m writing.
“Let me ask you this,” I said to her. “How many stories about robots are there?”
“I don’t know.”
“More than two, right?”
“More like two million I suppose.”
“So why worry about my sentient trees even though both J. R. R. Tolkein and terry Goodkind also have stories with sentient trees?”
She conceded, “Good point.”
Consider the number of:
Self help books
How to books
Grammar reference guides
And have no fear. Write like a champion!
I love these inspirational quotes from Howard Aiken:
“Don’t worry about people stealing your ideas. If your ideas are any good, you’ll have to ram them down people’s throats.”
