Authors have a lot to do.

  1. Write books.
  2. Edit said books.
  3. Proofread said books.
  4. Get said books off to alpha and beta readers.
  5. Seek publishing or set up self publishing...of yeah those books.
  6. And let us not forget...MARKET those books...
  7. and connect with readers...
  8. and do live in person &/or virtual events.

WHEW! That's an exhausting list!

Don't you love to save time and energy?

Well DUH! Of COURSE you do! Who doesn't. I mean...nobody is going to raise their hand and proclaim proudly, "I have NOTHING to do, so please, pile on more STUFF TO DO!"

Social media alone could devour 24/7 if you let it, and that will only account for a small percentage of your book sales anyway.

People tell me, "Ronda, you're EVERYWHERE? Do you sleep?"

Yes, I sleep. I'm everywhere because of some wonderful tricks and hacks As a matter of fact, I'm working on a book called 101 Tricks and Hacks for Writers right now. One of my favorite Cool Tools is in that book.

I know you're asking:

"How can I save time and energy on social media, Ronda?"

You probably feel like an exhausted hamster in a wheel, scurrying around to do this and that in a constant flurry of activity.

UPDATE: I originally did this post in spring of 2015. Tweet Jukebox is still a fabulous tool, but it is out of beta and no longer free. It is becoming Social Jukebox. I still use it, and in fact paid for a year in advance. I'll get to why in a bit.

If you haven't noticed, social media can take up a lot of time! I'm dedicated to making it fun and easy for myself AND for you authors! While interacting on Twitter recently, I came across a great tool called Tweet Jukebox. Before sharing it with you, I wanted to give it a "test drive" to see how I like it.

What Does Tweet Jukebox Offer?

Tweet Jukebox is a free service as of the time of this writing. No idea if that will change, but consider trying it out now if it fits your needs. You can schedule a rotation of tweets to help you share things like quotes, your blog posts, book teasers and more. These posts are organized into "Jukeboxes," and you get a free one with quotes to try out. Here are some of my jukeboxes.

  • Since I do frequent fiction book reviews, I have all of them in a jukebox called Book Reviews. Every few hours, one of them magically goes out into my Twitter stream.
  • Since I also help authors, I have aJ jukebox clled Author Help with all the tutorials, tips and strategies I share.
  • Since I'm an author, I have one with book teasers, excerpts, author interviews, poems and more.

7 Ways to Promote Your Live Author Event with Ease

This entry is part 6 of 6 in the series Book Launch Party

If you’re an author participating in a local event, such as a book signing, meet & greet, public reading or festival, you want to help the event be a huge success for yourself and the organizers. Here are 7 methods to help you easily promote the event and help your book marketing efforts at the same time.

Live author events, whether a book signing, reading, speaking engagement or something else, can be tremendously valuable...or not. It all depends. Mostly, it depends on the AUTHOR, not the event host.

I've noticed a lot of authors tend to expect to sit back and let the literary world deliver book sales with no effort on the wordsmith's part. I see it with publishing and with live events as well.

7 Tips for Promoting an Author Event

When you publish a book by whatever publishing method, you an't expect to put up your feet and let the publisher promote for you This simply does not happen. You can't just bury yourself in the next project; you have to promote and market your own book. That makes everybody happy, because you sell more books.

Same with events. Just because you've agreed to appear at a book signing, excerpt reading, or other live author event, that doesn't mean you keep your mouth shut about it and simply show up and sit in  your seat like a soggy lump until you're "on."

You want a successful event, right?

5 Reasons Why You Want to Help Promote an Author Book Signing/Speaking Event

  1. You might sell more books. This is obvious, but worth focused attention. People who are connected to you, whether readers, family or friends, are likely to come in support, and/or perhaps buy a book for themselves or as a gift. Sales are all about numbers. The more people attend, the more statistically likely it is for you to profit.
  2. Name recognition. Every author needs a wider net with more people who know about you and your books. Even if I don't like your genre, I have friends who do, and those friends are always looking for a good read. The old saying goes, "Out of sight, out of mind." You want to be IN sight and ON people's minds. Every time someone sees your name and hears about you, you become just a little more relevant.
  3. You only reap what you sow. You'll only get out what you invest. Contribute nothing and you can expect nothing in return. Then you'll be whining that the event was a waste of time when you, in fact, were at cause in the poor results. Help spread the word and you'll be the darling of the event hosts and can anticipate rich rewards.
  4. The Golden Rule Principle. Momma taught you the Golden Rule: "Treat others as you want them to treat you." The others are the event planners, any other authors, and the attendees. You want a great experience for everyone. The success of any event is a team effort. You want to care t the success of the event not only to bolster your own self-interest, but because it is right to put forth some effort. The event coordinators are most assuredly expending many hours and much energy to support YOUR writing.
  5. What you focus upon expands. Focus on expanding siness as an author and it shall grow. Simple universal law.

Here are 7 easy ways you can let your world know about your event. Continue reading "7 Ways to Promote Your Live Author Event with Ease"

Meeting your potential (and current) readers in person is a big deal. Book signings can either be a roaring success or a dismal waste of time. It all depends on how you the author approach it.

I've done a few author book signing events, and in fact I'm on a committee planning Meet the Author Day at the Kimberling Area Library in Kimberling City, Missouri. Here are some things I've witnessed.

Some authors come:

  • Having only a box of books and no table covering.
  •  Stacking books on the table in an unappealing manner.
  •  Sitting behind the table, waiting for magic to happen.
  • Wandering around talking to other authors instead of connecting with readers.
  • Having no way of making change or taking credit cards.
  • Making customers use coins instead of rounding that .95 up to the next dollar.
  • Not asking questions or talking with potential customers.

If any of these describe you, then you  will want to read this article and plan for your next event.

A Funny Thing Happened While Wiaiting to Hear from the Literary Agent

Waiting is hard, but there are some things an author can do while waiting to hear back from a publisher or literary agent.

SHARE!
Facebooktwittergoogle_pluspinterestlinkedintumblr

In case you haven't noticed - ha! - waiting is hard. As I write this, I am waiting for several things to happen with varying degrees of immediacy.

My delivery is supposed to come between 1 and 6. Hard going deep into something and possibly having to yank myself out of an intense scene or carefully organized nonfiction chapter. I have both going right now.

Author Success Essentials on WriteOnPurpose.com

I'm waiting for my friend to receive her present. That doesn't pull my focus often, and only briefly then.

And I'm waiting to hear back from the agent I recently pitched.  I can put it out of my mind a lot of the time  OK, some of the time. Whether her response will dish out the Hammer of Doom or the Gates of Glory, who wouldn't want to know sooner than later? One night I found myself wondering whether she had verified receipt of the digital files, so I went through the messages in the folder I made for her comms to check. Yep. She got them. Thought so, but...had to check.

Several friends who know I pitched my novel will ask, "Did you hear anything yet?" Continue reading "A Funny Thing Happened While Wiaiting to Hear from the Literary Agent"

Facebook is a HUGE part of social media for authors. No matter what kind of event you're doing, you can set up a Facebook event and invite your friends and contacts.

  • Speaking
  • Reading from your book
  • Book signing live in person,
  • Book launch party
  • Webinar
  • Teleseminar
  • Virtual book tour

You want to do this from your FACEBOOK PAGE, not your profile.

  • A PAGE is for businesses, authors, etc. It says "Like" or "Liked" when you're on someone' else's
  • A profile is the personal presence EVERYONE on Facebook has. It's where you go when you login. It says "Add friend" or "friends" when you're on someone' else's

When you host an event,

  1. go to your author PAGE,
  2. click events, and click ADd Event,
  3. complete the information,
  4. then invite guests.

This short video shows you how to invite friends to a Facebook event. Watch the video.

How to Participate in a Join.Me Web Conference

I love Join.me for webinars/web conferencing, but it’s new and strange to most folks, so naturally, I made a video tutorial. Here it is!

SHARE!
Facebooktwittergoogle_pluspinterestlinkedintumblr

There are a number of web conferencing / webinar services such as GoToWebinar, Instant Teleseminar, and Join.Me.

I observe that the moment someone meets a new platform, they go into freeze mode, followed by whining and flailing of arms (perhaps metaphorically) "I don't know what to DO-OO-OO-OO!"

This very thing happened when I tried getting an author friend into a Join.Me webinar. Just because she hadn't seen it, all of a sudden, the perfectly normal activities of dialing a phone and clicking a link became foreign to her.

Yep, that's all it is.

If you can dial a phone and click a linbk, you can join a Join.Me web conference.

I use Join.Me because its affordable and it has a few tools, like being able to circle things onscreen.

Here's what to do.  Watch the video tutorial.

If you decide to use join.me, feel free to share this tutorial with your attendees.

Book Marketing Skills Book Review: Social Media Just for Writers by Frances Caballo

This #BookReview of Social Media Just for Writers will help you decide whether this is a resource that would benefit you. I happen to love it and find it useful.

Facebooktwittergoogle_pluspinterestlinkedintumblr

I encountered author and social media Frances Caballo through her podcast of the same name. It's short, useful, and straight to the point. Based on that, I hadhigh expectations of her book. I'm happy to report that she did not disappoint. I'd recommend listening to it. Here's the link.

Cover of Social Media Just for Writers by Frances Caballo

Review -  Social Media Just for Writers by Frances Caballo

Warning - this book COULD overwhelm you. It's not one of those how-to books  you'll want to read cover to cover. There is a LOT of info. It's like the writer's social media desk reference, teaching the networks, tools and helpful hints and tricks to master them.

With a table of contents several pages long, this will no doubt be clear to you right away. But fear not, because each chapter is broken down into nice "bite-sized" pieces.

The only thing I worry about with this book is that you'll be so inundated with the various tools, planners etc that you throw your hands up in the air and stick your head in the sand.

That said, it's an essential reference. You'll get not merely an overview of the various social networks and the tools to manage them, but  guidance on how to make the most of all of it. Nobody can predict which tools YOU will prefer, but with the listing and descriptions, you can check things out and make your best decisions.

Don't try to be in all networks. Pick one and get used to it, then branch out from there.

How Social Media Helps Authors Develop Your Author Platform: Author Speaker Mentor Ronda Del Boccio Featured in Vox Magazine

Vox Magazine featured me as a veteran author with a solid social media system. Check out the article and a social media for authors tip!

Social media offers huge opportunities for authors when you use the networks as a point of connection with readers rather than as bullhorn self-promotion platforms.

Ronda Del Boccio Tweets to the Top: Vox Magazine Article

It's such fun to get a phone call "out of the blue," as the saying goes, with an offer to be interviewed for a regional magazine. Free publicity - YEAH!

Vox Magazine out of Columbia College featured me in their article,  Here's an excerpt of the article

Ronda Del Boccio Tweets to the Top

For author Ronda Del Boccio, successful self-publishing starts with social media

On the rural outskirts of Branson, author Ronda Del Boccio has two cats and more than 7,000 Twitter followers to keep her company. Although Del Boccio has written two Amazon bestsellers, her number of followers comes from years of planning, testing and refining a formula, not her eight books.

Using social media, she created a self-marketing method in 2013 to attract her readers. Del Boccio bypasses the additional cost of a publisher and delivers her pages from the presses straight to the people.

Love Letter to My Future Leader Dog

This is a little about my journey as a blind person and then a love letter to my future Leader Dog, whom I will meet when I go to Michigan for 26 days, hopefully this summer #LeaderDogs #GuideDogs #blindness

Facebooktwittergoogle_pluspinterestlinkedintumblr

As a "partially sighted" / "low vision" woman living in a world that values what is seen by the eye above all else, I can honestly say that embracing my identity as a blind person and learning the skills of blindness have freed me to experience life on my own terms.

Learning to use a long white cane empowered me to carry my head high without worrying about the ground, because my cane would tell me what my eyes could not.

The second revolution in my life as a blind person was making the decision to travel with a guide dog. This provided even more freedom, because I could miss that crack in  the sidewalk entirely and get to the back of a line with ease.

Both of my guide dogs, Thunder and Molly, not only helped me, but they also had their own sacred missions and touched countless lives. Both were Joy Dogs who, in vastly different ways, opened hearts.

When It was time for that horrible but necessary decision to say farewell to Molly, I thought I might not get another guide dog.

Then the reality of life without a trusted guide set in. While I still get around well with a cane, my life is so empty without a dog. While it's nice not having to walk a dog in the pouring rain or bitter cold, there's also no companion to help me deal with crowds and miss all those obstacles my cane finds that a dog helped me avoid.

So 18 dogless months later, I decided to apply for a guide dog from Leader Dogs for the Blind. It took 26 days to complete the application, which included a vide, 6 references, a doctor visit (which was a big deal because I don't do doctors), a vision evaluation (pointless as I'm no less blind than I was when I had an official letter from a previous eye doc), and a form so detailed I expected it to come with a cheek swab for DNA.

May 13th, I got word that I am accepted for a dog and will go to Michigan sometime, maybe July or August, to get my dog! It will be a whole new adventure for me as well as the dog.

Question

Whereas I chose and trained my first 2 dog from puppyhood onward, this time a trainer will select the perfect dog for me. I don't know what breed or gender.

I am thrilled to surrender to this new adventure, and I love my dog with all my heart, even though I have not met him or her yet. Here is my love letter to my future Leader Dog.

Do you make it easy for your reader to take the next step with you?

Whether you write fiction or nonfiction (or both, as do I), it's important to hold your reader's hand and not let go.

Tell your reader things like:

how to find you on social.

how to get a free gift, story, tool, etc. from you

how to contact you.

how to get the most out of the book (nonfiction)

how to use your membership site

Watch this video in which I give members of my programs for authors a tour and show you how to get the most from your membership. Continue reading "Authors: Do You Hold Your Reader’s Hand? Video"
