A self-help corruption. A hypnotic coercion. A demonic collusion.

Could a wildly popular self-help author be lulling heartbroken young women to their death? When several seemingly separate events rouse Kassidy’s suspicions, the professional busybody embarks on a relentless search for the truth.

They All Died Smiling Sneak Peek Cover

Kassidy’s despised “gift” of seeing demons in people re-awakens during her Friday commute home. Her roommate loans her a hot new women’s self-help book. Her boss at the paper sends her to cover a drowning. The dead woman wears an ecstatic smile on her face…just like a motorcycle accident victim who died months ago, hundreds of miles away. And sparks fly between Kassidy and a childhood friend she hasn’t seen in a decade who reappears in her life.

When supernatural power oozes from the popular book and tries to grab her, Kassidy suspects that the minister author has sinister intentions and demonic alliances. But will she use her gift to stop the demonic killing spree?

FREE Story: An Angel Came” from I’ll Push You Steer, by Ronda Del Boccio

Updated Excerpt from I’ll Push You Steer in which recall a real encounter in which a woman I met is certain an angel came to her. Update reflects new cover and publisher change.

Important NOTE: This post originally came out December 20 of 20165. It is updated to reflect a publishing change. AWOC Books closed its doors, and my co-author and I just released the book on I'll Push You Steer: The Definitive Guide to Stumbling through Life with Blinders On on Kindle.

People around the world are celebrating miracles at this time of year, which is December, in case you read this some months in the future. Jews celebrate the miracle of the oil, Hindus the miracle of light, and Christians the miracle of the savior's birth, just to mention a few.

I'll Push You Steer Kindle cover

I was thinking about one of the stories in my first book, I'll Push You Steer, with my fabulous co-author and dear friend Bonnie Tesh. We each shared tales from our journey in what many would call "disability."

Award Winning & Best Selling Author Ronda Del Boccio's Books On Amazon

One of my contributions, "An Angel Came," is the story of how myt belief trumped the church's teachings when I went to visit a comatose woman in the hospital. Martha was not expected to awaken.

Do you expect miracles? I do. P

lease enjoy "An Angel Came. I've posted just the beginning here. Those who have joined Ronda's Readers get the full tale free as a downloadable PDF.

Dreaming Up Stories Literally!

Strange things can happen in dreams. Here’s how one became a best selling story! #BlissfulLife #WritersLife

Writing is a funny business. I never know what will spark my imagination It could be anything from a line on a TV show to a song lyric to an encounter at the grocery store to a misty morning...

to a dream.

Yep, I have actually dreamed up stories. The Assassin and the Prince, one of my fantasy novellas, is just such a tail...and tale.

While the purrsonality of feline assassin Aree owes inspiration to my former companion, Tica, that's where the connection to anything here in earth reality ends.

Cover of The Assassin and the Prince YA fantasy romance novela by Ronda Del Boccio

My Muse gifted me with an exquisitely detailed dream about this assassin who found what looked like a cush job, a short gig working for a family seeking a security guard to protect their son, who wanted to go on vacation without his parents.

Aree soon regrets her decision to take a job protecting a pampered young prince who seems to her little more than a spoiled brat of no substance.

For his part, the sheltered Crispin has never been around other sentient species, so he has a lot to learn about how to treat those who are different. (So do most humans living here on earth who need only encounter different nationalities and religions...but I digress.)

OK so I guess hat's another relation to reality.

The dream provided every detail of the story, including characters, fight scenes, conflict, and loads of funny bits. It's definit3ely a humorous paranormal story.

I will post an excerpt in a few days. You can read The Assassin and the Prince on any device. It's available both on Amazon and on Smashwords.

You never know what will come of a dream.

Excerpt and Cover Reveal: Trouble’s Turn: A Mystical Animal Allies Short Story by Ronda Del Boccio

This is a book excerpt and cover reveal of a mystical coming of age short story titled “Trouble’s Tale: A Mystical Animal Allies Short Story” by me, Ronda Del Boccio. American Indian wisdom and Native American spirituality inspired this tale

Recently I've discovered the coolness that is Smashwords, a free way to publish in a variety of digital book formats. Simply by uploading a Word doc file, I can get my book into places like Kobo, Apple iBooks, and Barnes and Noble.

So I figured that I would put up some of my work, including a couple novellas and today, "Trouble's Turn: a Mystical Animal Allies Short Story."

Dreaming Stories

I had a dream that became this story. Though this tale doesn't resemble the dream, it got me thinking of the life of the animal Allies of Native American spirituality and what their lives are like.

In American Indian Wisdom, each person has an "Ally," an animal spirit guide who helps them live a good life. Trouble in this story is a young White Wolf trying to figure out her place in the world.

Making "Trouble's Turn" FREE

Why Smashwords and not just Amazon? I'll go over that another time, but the main thing is I can't make the short story free for everyone (not just Kindle Unlimited subscribers who pay) on Amazon.

I'm so excited to share the COVER of this short story along with the link where yu can get it in the format of your choice.

Grief Is Like a Tea Bag: Book Excerpt from They All Died Smiling: Kassidy and Russell First Kiss

This is a combination writing clinic about bringing emotion into your work and a snack for readers in the form of a book excerpt of my upcoming novel They All Died Smiling. This excerpt shows Kassidy and Russell’s first kiss. She struggles between her attraction and grief over the death of her soldier husband.

I just did an interview for a funeral home. Not a job interview. The kind a writer gives to an interested party.

Yeah, I don't know "why Ronda" either, but there it is.

Writing Challenges

Anyway, the topic of grief naturally arose, and I mentioned how grief infiltrates life the way a teabag infuses its essence into water. Grief can be a powerful motivator for a wide variety of actions a character takes (or does not take).  For the reader, seeing how the protagonist or other character responds to grief can make for fascinating  reading. The more a book or short story brings out emotion in the reader, the better.

That means a writer needs to infuse each tale with any and all emotions that comprise life. An author who is a student of human  nature and a keen observer has a clear advantage in potraying these emotions on the page.

Here is a book excerpt from my upcoming novel They All Died Smiling, .showing how Kassidy's grief over the death of her husband makes it hard for her to consider being with another man, even though she knows full well Randy would want her to move on. Book Excerpt: Ridgeline, Book One of the Long Journey Home Series by Pamela Foster

This is a #BookExcerpt from a historical novel called Ridgeline by Pamela Foster. you an also get the link to my #BookReview.

Do you enjoy historical fiction? Here's an excerpt of a book about a circuit rider (preacher) with a tormented soul and the innocent who loves him despite his many flaws.

Ridgeline - a historical novel by Pamela Foster

Book Excerpt: Rigeline

On the ridgeline, Jeremiah shifted in the saddle and breathed deep the smell of wood smoke floating up from the chimney of the cabin below, drank in the sight of Maggie, his woman, leaning in the open door of the cabin from which he had ridden away seven months earlier. He indulged his vanity and fed his hope by believing this woman had stood right there through all the long days he'd been gone serving the Lord, through every star-filled night while he curled, dog-like, around an open fire and watched the stars turn in the sky and imagined her just like this, watching the horizon for his return, patient even as he tarried.

As if, in his absence, she'd not gone about her daily life, tended her ragged garden, tolerated the touch of her brutish husband as he ran a rough hand up and over the birthmark that stained the inside of her left thigh, the reddish mark the near exact size and shape of a mouse, the curlicue of the tail disappearing into her dark warmth. As if, in place of what had become of her life, through all these days and nights, the woman had simply waited, her longing quietly drawing him to her as a ripe moon calls the rising tide.

The bay tossed her head, a quiver running from withers to nose. Jeremiah gathered the reins and spoke low, his words a silvery fog that hung in the motionless air for a moment before floating wraith-like to join a cloud of cooling sweat rising from the horse. Winter-robbed of all but palest gold, dawn's fingers crept over the eastern rise and glinted cold light from the woman's hand—a deep, lethal-blue flash the preacher knew all too well as the gemlike color of a tiny, killing bottle, no bigger surely than the seed of sin born in David's heart when first he looked upon Bathsheba.

The snarling voice of the woman's husband split the morning air, destroyed all hope. The sound floated up the hill ominous as the first notes of a bugle on a misty morn with men lined on either side of some godforsaken hill or blood-thirsty meadowland. Jeremiah spurred his horse down into the hollow even as Maggie raised the blue bottle to her mouth, her head thrown back, her tender, white throat exposed as she swallowed his dreams drop by drop, condemned him to hell for all eternity.

"Nooooo!" His plea pierced the heavens.

However, evil forces of both natural and supernatural origins want Glory’s baby.

Book Review and Excerpt of Paranormal Romance Thriller Glory: The Legend of Glory Book 1 by Devin O’Branagan

This is an in-depth book review and excerpt of Glory, first in the Legend of Glory series by #1 best selling author Devin O’Branagan.

Welcome back to another Write On Purpose book review. Each week I review a well-written book, highlighting what makes it good from the reader’s perspective and what writing skills and techniques make it an irresistible read. Thus, each review serves both writers and readers.

This week's excellent read is Glory:  The Legend of Blory, Book 1 by #1 best selling author Devin O'Branagan.

I've known #1 best selling author Devin O'Branagan since I helped her with the first book launch of GLory. Now, she is talking with a producer about turning the book into a movie or TV program. I hope that comes true, because Glory is an excellent book.

Read my 5-star Amazon review.

5 Star Review Graphic

Cover of Glory by Devin O'Branagan

This is a story about a teenager who rises to meet incredible challenges. Her helpers include a fabulous dog, an angel and a vampire. It is the first of a trilogy, and I have read and reviewed them all.

Starting The Story Where The Change Happens

No matter what genre you write, it's important to start where the change begins. Ruminating over tea doesn't cut it these days. Glory begins powerfully, with the impending death of Glory's father.

A pandemic is sweeping the country, and Glory's blood has the antidote, but not only the "good guys" are after it.. Here is the Glory book trailer video:

Watch the video.

Amp up the Story with Internal and External Conflict

Conflict makes a story interesting. After all, if nothing happens, you don't have a novel. There are two kinds of conflict that make for a good book. Both are important. This trilogy has them both in roughly equal measure.

External conflict

External conflict refers to those elements outside the point of view character. these challenges come from outside the person and include the major plot hurdles for the story. in Glory,  our hero deals with the nasty bug and with people who are after her because of her uniqueness.

Internal conflict

Internal conflict comes from a character struggling with her emotions and actions. Glory's struggles include losing her father to the pandemic and the feelings she develops for her vampire and angel guardians.

The internal landscape is what distinguishes one book from another. Many would argue that there are perhaps only 30 or 50 plots around love, revenge, achievement and the like..

It's how the point of view character(s) handling their challenges, their road of trials, that distinguish a book. The character-against-world themes are similar. How a hero interacts with her world sets a story apart from the rest.

That's why I say the internal conflict makes a book even more than the more obvious plot elements, such as in this case the pandemic, good and evil beings, and the scientists.

While this is a young adult tale with a 17-year-old hero, it is a good read for adults as well.

A Curvaceous Protagonist

I LOVE books with a strong female character who's curvy, not twiggy. I'm writing one like that just now myself. Here's how Glory reacts when she hears a policeman tell a friend they're looking for a girl about her age but "much heavier":

I bristled. I wasn't heavy. I was--as dad had described me--voluptuous : chesty, hippy, and curvaceous, but most certainly not fat.

Yay! Having so often been shamed for my size, I can appreciate a character being proud of her curves. I'm so sick of movies and TV shows glorifying women who could blow away if you sneeze on them.

Wits Win

While there are numerous supernatural elements and beings, both helping and detracting from Glory and her mission to save the world, there is no savior. No rescuer. She must rely on her own wits and strength. This is an element that improves any story, and I like the way O'Branagan handles the balance.

Glory Book Excerpt:

I floated and it felt good. It was warm and bright and I was at peace.

Dominic appeared. “Don’t go,” he said.

I looked down at my body lying in a soggy ditch in a pool of blood. “I don’t have a choice anymore.”

“I’m here now. I can help if you want me to.”

I didn’t want him to. The world and all its misery had lost its allure. I was done.

He knew what I was feeling and I could feel him too. It was shockingly intimate. He yearned for me to want to return; he needed me to be noble.

“I’m not your salvation,” I said.

I felt his disappointment. He wanted to love humanity for his father’s sake, and I was conscious of his regret at not being able to. I felt his remorse for having failed me, his tenderness for me, and how that new emotion surprised him. I wanted to comfort him and take away his pain. He sensed my affection for him and was moved by it. Our empathic connection was exquisite.

I realized that what we shared at that moment was what everybody longed for—the merging of bodies was a poor imitation of the merging of hearts.

Suddenly, I wanted to do whatever it took to relieve his suffering and the suffering of all those who could benefit from my blood. In that moment, I suffered the pain of all creation. I needed to heal it.

My translucent hand reached for him. “Take me home.”

He didn’t ask which home I meant. His heart knew.

I hope you'll get your copy of the whole trilogy.

Novel Writing Help: Do Your Characters Have to Cuss? NaNoWriMo Day 26

Today while working on They All Died Smiling, on my mad dash to 50,000 words this month for NaNoWriMo,  I needed to deal with an angry phone call without suddenly introducing swear words into an otherwise clean book.

Image depicting swearing, but with no actual foul words

At meetings of the Northwest Arkansas Writer's Workshop, when an author is reading their allowed five pages, sometimes there is a cuss word on the page but the author replaces it with something more for a G-rated audience.

We travelers talked about cussing and steamy scenes in writing on the road back home.  None of our group prefers Rated-R type content.

I'm pretty sure I won't ever write a character who drops F-bombs every other sentence. I don't care to read that and certainly have no desire to write it.

More mild cussing I can handle, though I'm happier without it. That's just me. I make no value judgments about you no matter what your preference may be.

The thing is, lots of people swear, and they won't all say "oh shucky-darns." Here's how I handled that in They All Died Smiling for the one scene in which it intrudes into the story.

Artfully Avoiding Cuss Words

Keep in mind that Kassidy, in whose head you are for the entire novel, is the daughter of a Baptist preacher and not prone to coarse talk.

Kassidy never made it to work because she was taken elsewhere. Her boss did not grow up in Maybury.

My cell vibrated for perhaps the fifth time. “Please excuse me, gentlemen. Since we’re on a break, I’d better answer this time. I’m pretty sure it’s my boss.”

Predictably, all the calls were from my editor. I answered. He yelled so loud into my ear it vibrated my head and I couldn’t even understand him. I dropped the phone, fumbled it back into my hand, switched sides, prepared to hold it a foot away from the other ear.

“What’s his name,” Joshua asked.

“Bob Barkley, my editor.”

He reached for the phone, tried several times without success o break through Bulldog Bob’s bellowing. Whence a moment of silence finally arrived, he put the phone to his ear and said, “Mr. Barkley, this is Agent Joshua Hayes of the FBI. Ms. Bates is helping us with an investigation.”

He yelled something a bull leaves behind so loud we all heard.

“That’s twenty bucks in the cuss can, Bob. And it’s the God’s honest truth.”

A pause, then uproarious laughter. “Oh yeah, and I’m the Queen of England.”

He next told me which portion of me needed to make an immediate appearance back at the Trib.

“Just that part? That’s forty bucks in the cuss can, Bob,” I said. “I’m afraid I’m detained.”

His debt doubled again before he slammed down the phone so hard I wondered if it broke. I’ve seen that in movies but never experienced it. I envisioned him stomping around the newsroom giving everyone an extra hard time. I’m in an alternate universe where a normal day has no meaning.

Russ’ mouth hung open.

“He thought I was lying.” Joshua stared stunned at my phone, then handed it back.

The incredulity in his voice, the look on my friend’s face, and Bob’s tantrum acted as a pressure release. I laughed so hard my sides hurt. I suppose I should have been upset, but with everything else in my life going sideways, I truly saw the humor.

Once I had regained composure, I told them, “I feel sorry for the poor folks in the newsroom today. Bulldog Bob is going to go berserk on them over the truth.”

What do you think of how I handled the situation? I hope Kass' natural wit came through in a way that made you chuckle without seeming ridiculous.

Now for the...

How Do You Make Minor Characters Come to Life? NaNoWriMo Day 3

Today’s NaNoWriMo musings include an excerpt from They All Died Smiling. Discover how to bring minor characters easily, without doing a big profile on them.

How do you bring your minor characters to life?

I'm participating in National Novel Writing Month, NaoWriMo, My book is They All Died Smiling, a paranormal suspense story.

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) partiipant badge 2014)Today I was thinking about minor characters and what I do to make the come to life.

Honestly, even the minor characters typically simply "come to me." Occasionally I base one off of someone from my real life, but mostly they present themselves to me.

When I need a minor character, I like to know one thing that makes them stand out. It's not necessary to invent a whole back story for them.CHicago Tribune Building against a clear blue skyWhen I needed to have Kassidy's editor at the Chicago Tribune  send her out on assignment, an image of a bulldog came to me. The dialogue between them poured out. He's funny to her rather than intimidating, much to his chagrin, I'm sure.

Since Kass tends to give people nicknames, he shall forever be Bulldog Bob to her. The Arts and Entertainment Editor is Princess Olivia because of her grace and regal manner. Toni, hostess at Lou Mitchell's, is the Matchmaker.

She also has a couple of names for who becomes the antagonist, but I'll share that later.

Here's the encounter between Kassidy and her editor:

Bulldog Bob stopped and pointed at me. “Bates.” He reminded me of a bulldog, because of his big jowls and four chins. Any chair he sat in creaked in protest. He hooked his finger in a ‘come here’ gesture and went into his office, expecting me to be at his heels.

With him, I never knew what to expect. But then nobody else did either. He always scowled and barked orders, so I could be getting fired, scolded, praised or promoted. Impossible to tell until whatever it was happened.

Note to self. Better not ever call him Bulldog Bob to his face.

“A woman died in the River. Go.” He handed me a piece of paper and turned his attention to the computer. Code for dismissed.

The Chicago River made the miracle of walking on water seem possible. Thick and filthy, it was hard to imagine someone drowning in it.

“She couldn’t climb up the piles of pollution and save herself?”  I calculated the commute time and stayed put.

Bob grunted and kept typing. “Good one, Bates. When do you open at Second City?”

“Next week, if I keep getting assignments like this.” I’ve never been to the legendary comedy club, but it is on my list of places to visit. In the audience, not as a comedian.

The typing paused, then resumed. “You’re still standing there.”

“You’re observant this morning. Must’ve had your coffee.”

“Deadline is in two hours, so you’d better get a move on.” He snapped.

It would take me most of that time to commute if I had to take the bus. “Keys.” I held my palm out for them.

He shook his head.

“Bob, you’re giving me a two hour deadline. I don’t’ have a car here and I don’t know the city. You have a Garmen, so I can get there and back in almost enough time to write half an article for you.”

“Nothin doin. I‘ve seen how you park.”

“I practiced,” I lied. Nobody ever has to parallel park in the Ozarks.

He stood and loomed over me with his jowls hanging and swaying in front of him. “One scratch and you’re dead. Hear me? Not just fired. D. E. A. D. Dead.”

“Gee, thanks for the spelling lesson. I always wondered how to spell that word.”

He grunted and tossed me the keys.

“See you in a couple of hours.” After my father and a houseful of boys, it took a whole lot more than blubber wagging in my face to intimidate me.

How am I progressing?

This graphic shows howI am progressing toward my goal.

I  gave it a 5-star review on Amazon.

Here is my review of Complicated Creatures.

A romantic suspense novel with real SUBSTANCE!,June 24, 2014

I love suspense. I sometimes enjoy romance and sometimes not so much. Depends on whether there's any real emotional depth or not. In this case, there is.

Complicated Creatures excited me, engaged my imagination, and gave me characters with real emotions. Sure, there's some steam, but the characters truly come across as people. They jump off the page. It's unusual to find a first time novelist who writes this well.

I love this book and am excited to read the rest of the series.

Writing Challenges: My 30 Day Short Story Challenge Day 1

I love writing fiction, so I challenge myself to write a story a day for the next month.

I love writing fiction, and I decided to challenge myself to write a story a day for a month, starting today.

The first story is loosely based on a guy who saw Bigfoot in Lampe Missouri over 30 years ago, when he was a young man on a date. When he told me about his experience, he actually said the line that became the title of the story: “She had a curfew. I had a van.” I loved that line so much, I used it as the title.

Writing Challenges

Here's a sample of the 30-Day Short Story Writing Challenge Day 1 story.

Excerpt of “She Had a Curfew…I had a Van” (a Bigfoot story)

by Ronda Del Boccio copyright 2014

My sisters never took a liking to fishing, but I got real lucky with my girl. She likes to fish near as much as I do, and she don’t mind cleaning the fish neither. We had made a full day of it at the lake fishin’, swimmin’ and…carryin’ on as young folk do.  We ate our catch for supper. We had a couple beers too, but don’t tell her dad.

Sunbeams danced on Table Rock Lake as the sun set, making a feller remember God’s in charge and not us puny people. We stood ankle deep in the water, arms around each other, watching the sun kiss the lake goodnight. All too soon, it’d be time for us to kiss each other goodnight on account of her curfew.  Sometimes it’s hard havin’ a girl who ain’t quite legal to make up her own mind on things like when it’s time to go home.

It’s real hard to think of much of anything when she’s so close to me. I forget all about God and the beauty of the lake and everything else, even fishin’, if you can imagine that’. Well, if you’re a guy, I know  you can imagine that..

I'll post an excerpt each day and share some writing tips along the way.

Today's writing tip: Focus

Keeping on a writing schedule means you have to be able to focus. Naturally, I have other things to do, like anyone else, so to keep on task, I turn off other distractions and do nothing but write for the half hour or hour I'm devoting to it.

I'm giving myself an hour for the story.

Hen In Snow

by Ronda Del Boccio

We instinctively feel the danger. We cackle and run under the nearest bush, tree or shelter where death cannot take us. From my hiding place, I look at the empty yard. Relief! Nobody will die today.

Peeping in the tall grass. The babies! I rush toward them, cover them with my body and wings.

Hawk soars down, down, down. Big sharp talons stretched to kill. I will give my life for the babies.

Heavy weight lands on me, flies away. I feel a harsh prick. Stunned, I cannot move. Peeping from below rouses me.

I live! Hawk hunts.
