How to ReLaunch a Book: Stephanie Frank’s “Accidental” Millionaire Book Relaunch Team

Most everybody has heard about new book launches, which involve getting lots of folks to pick up a book during a certain period of time (a day to a week usually).

But what about older books?

It's fantastic to reach bestseller status and keep sales going, yet the honest truth is that any book is likely to fall in rankings over time without a sustained advertising campaign.

Your old books don't have to die an slow, ignominious death.

Relaunching The Accidental Millionaire

I read The Accidental Millionaire by Stephanie Frank years ago. In it, she recounts her own rise to wealth. She wrote it at a time of career transition. It's an engaging story with lots of gold nuggets of wisdom. No reason it should languish.

Here's the book description of the current edition on Amazon:

Imagine…YOU as a millionaire in your own business. Look through the eyes of The Accidental Millionaire, Stephanie Frank, as she takes you on a journey of triumph and tears, laughter and loss while building not one but two multi-million dollar service businesses. Read and learn as she gives you the insider scoop – the strategies, secrets and truth for what it REALLY takes to achieve success, make the right decisions, break through barriers and become the powerful leader of your life. You will laugh, you will cry – but most of all, you will be inspired to take action

Linda Stirling, The Relaunch Queen, is helping Stephanie Relaunch this book. they're inviting people to join the team to help spread the empowering message of the book all over the web to help it rise up the Amazon sales ranks.

She's made it quick and easy to participate. If you're willing to spend a few minutes of time and 99 cents for the Kindle book during the launch period, that's all it takes to be involved.

Author: Does Your Book Title Sing?

Whether you write fiction or nonfiction, short piece or novel, the title is one of the elements that first captures or loses a prospective reader's attention. So it better be great.

The job of a title is simply to grab your busy possible reader's attention and make her want to know, "What's that?"

A Tasty Morsel Book Tease: Bloodlust awakens, secreted deep in a cave. Humans are tasty. A Tasty Morsel by Ronda Del Boccio, available on Amazon Kindle http://WriteOnPurpose.com/morsel

I had been trying to find the perfect title for my fantasy suspense novel for weeks. I played with various ones, and finally got it. Yay! Below, I'll share techniques I use to get a title that sings.

When a title "sings," you FEEL it in your body. Sure, it touches the ear just right too, but once you've found the right one, it feels right.

Here are some of my titles.

  • A Tasty Morsel
  • "Into the Bubble" (spiritual fantasy short story"
  • Deadly Mist: Mirrored Worlds, Book 1 (fantasy-suspense novel, available to publish)
  • Real Dogs Don't Eat Kibble by Sandra Bailey
  • "She Had a Curfew...I Had a Van" (award-winning short story.
  • "Hillbilly Heaven" (award-winning short story)

Character Name Generators

Have you ever been writing a story (whether short or novel length) and found yourself stuck for a name of a character? I certainly have. Sometimes I have a first name and need a surname. Sometimes I want a fantasy- or an evil sounding name.

Name Generators BLog Series

So here are some name generators of different types that might be just what you seek. I hope you find htem useful. And if you come across a different one that isn't included in this list, please DO let me know by adding it to the comments using Facebook or Google+.

Fantasy Names

When I opened this generator, these are a few of the names it gave me:

  • Brand Ravendread
  •  Dirk Seraphdream
  •  Drake Loreguard
  •  Eden Griffonvictor
  • < Grail Chaostotem

Quick Character Namer

This isn't sophisticated, but it might give you a good idea. You can choose a male or female name and say how many names to provide. You could always mix and match. This uses common names in the USA based on census data.

  • Grace Mills
  •  Ivy Diaz
  •  Jillian Carson
  •  Joy Zelma Moon
  •  Juanita Mattie Chen
  •  Kathy Trevino
  •  Keisha Tasha Sanders
  •  Kristine Fuller

Weird Name Generator

I write fantasy and paranormal quite a bit, and next time I need a strange sounding name, I might try this one. Maybe one of these will be what you seek:

  • The Seventh Profane Queen Who Desires Madness
  • The Seventh Rogue That Burns the Monk
  • The Sly Bloodstained Sultanna
  • The Studious Forgotten Czarina That Burns Clouds
  • Turquoise of the Celestial Tower

Not sure why the fixation on burning clouds, but it just might tickle your muse. My personal fav from this short list is The Studious Forgotten Czarina That Burns Clouds. Maybe I'll use that as a writing prompt and write a story about her.

Evil Sounding Names

These names are inspired by J. R. R. Tolkein's body of work. Her are a few samples:

  • Durormat
  • Faua
  • Glard
  • Gwengoturathae
  • Ingo
  • Itungu
  • Lariauindua
  • Ldugon
  • Lonalongila
  • Matur

I'm using one of these for a Ghoul in a humorous paranormal sequel to A Tasty Morsel.

Demon Name Generator

I have a feeling I'll be using this one to help inspire me for the series around my "pantser" demon hunter Kassidy. Here are a few samples.

  • Hasatuzs
  • Zsuesason
  • Tonserolon
  • Lasoron
  • Nuhsatoah
  • Lais
  • Ponis
  • Olashadea

Western Names

I love looking at these generators, even though I don't write westerns. Here are a few from when I ran it to write this post:

  • Angela "Thinker" Jensen
  • Deborah "Gravedigger" Stevens
  • Gambling Reynolds
  • Joanne "Shooter" Payne
  • Lillie "Sunset" Beck
  • Lost Adams

My personal favorite from this list is Deborah "Gravedigger" Stevens. If you're into writing westerns, I bet you could craft a short story around a female grave digger, or one who doesn't dig them but has that nickname.

Wrestler Names

This one's also good for warriors/fighters or bad guys. I thought this was so funnyt that I had to share it. You don't need to be writing a story about WWF to use a name like any of these:

  • Q. O. "The Princess" Turner
  • Sandra "Unknowable Venus" Johnson
  • Stephanie "Blessed Goddess" Scott
  • Sue "The Word" Pierce

I like Stephanie "Blessed Goddess" Scott. Imagine a fighter with that appellation. Fun.Those should help you find character names. I'll post generators for places, animals, etc. in future posts, so watch the "Name Generators" series for more.

Book Excerpt of Depraved by Woody P. Snow

It's fun to try a book before you buy. Here's a sample of the chilling book I reviewed earlier this week, Depraved.

Depraved by Woody P. Snow

Cover of Depraved by WOody P. Snow

Trapped between life and death, justice and revenge,
while a beautiful murderer lurks.

Evil disguises itself behind a mask of beauty in DEPRAVED. Finley Bliss must survive a shocking betrayal by his stunning, murderous wife Eva. Stranded in a coma and warehoused in a squalid nursing home, Finley must cross back over the mystical river of life to consciousness, so he can reveal the truth, exact justice and seek revenge . . . but how? Ruthless Eva has legal and medical protocols on her side — the authority to pull the plug to end his life support. Finley's only chance is a mysterious being he calls James Earl Jones who appears by the river to give him counsel.
Depraved is an insightful, genre-bending thriller — a gripping mystery and a compelling love story, from the beginning to the surprise ending.

Excerpt: of Depraved

"Would you like to talk about it?"
"Talk about it?" Finley flared. "Talk about it?"
Holy crap, something awful had just happened, something horrible. He couldn't remember what. A car accident maybe? No. No, it was something about his wife. Weren't they just talking about his wife? He had just said something about her to this guy, but what was it? Why was everything so jumbled? His head felt like it was splitting. And who was this guy anyway? Whatever. Whatever. Here he was. He was here now, in this place, this . . . where was he again? The lights in the room started to flicker. Wherever it was, they seemed to be having electrical issues.
"Stay with me," the old man said.
Finley stared.
"Are you a movie star?"
"Do I look like a movie star?"
Finley smacked his forehead.
"What is this, hell for boring people? Is that where I am?"
"Stop it," the man commanded. "Don't get all stormy on me." He steepled his fingertips together. "Please," he coaxed. "Easy. Easy."
Finley was anything but easy. He was outraged.
"So I'm boring; so shoot me." The abundance of impulses now discharging from the nerve cells in his brain generated a power surge. The circuit breaker was tripped, and those flickering lights went out.
James Earl Jones shook his head, started another game of solitaire, and waited.
There was no time clock in this arena, no measurement of time to speak of at all, so the question of how long Finley's brain remained offline was moot. Eventually, his head jerked.
"Oh, crap. Whoa. What is going on with me?"
The elderly black man watched as Finley struggled to refamiliarize himself with his surroundings.
Below him somewhere he heard air-filled balls bouncing on hardwood and saw ghostly people-shaped forms doing . . . something. Shooting hoops, that was it. His dad used to ask him to go out into the drive and shoot hoops before dinner. I'm in a basketball gym. He started to look around.
"Don't be looking 'round now," a voice from behind said. "You've got to watch something here."
Finley could not help but turn to see who had spoken.
The man smiled.
"You look like you're surprised to see me."
What a strange way to start a conversation.
"Why wouldn't I be?" he asked.
"We've been talking for twenty minutes."
Finley struggled for context, but had to settle for déjà vu.
"Twenty minutes? You and I?"
"Maybe twenty hours," the man said.
Déjà vu, big time.
"You need to watch something here," the man said.
Finley wondered now if he had stumbled into some insane person's LSD trip or maybe onto the set of a bad Hollywood movie. Yes! A movie! That would explain the guy sitting just above him. Morgan Freeman? No, that wasn't right. Well, hey, this might be fun.
No, it wouldn't be. For one thing, his head ached like a train wreck, and, for another, he had no script. Had he lost it? He didn't know his lines. He didn't know his part. He was probably just an extra, but where was the director? None of this made sense, any sense at all, and, yet, somehow it all seemed familiar.
At the far end of the room, a blinding light poured through a door and a voice called out names: "Brinley, Brywell, Deffenderfer, Lewis, Reed, Taylor, and Vanaman."
Finley watched seven figures drop their basketballs, hustle into the luminescent tube, and start for the door.
"Head for the light, right?"
"Only if you're called," the man admonished. "That's what I've been trying to explain to you."
Finley stood up. "I'm going."
"No, you're not," the old man said. "Sit back down."
He didn't care if his name had been called or not. Finley wanted out. He hopped down the bleachers and headed for the river of light.
The man rose with alarm.
"Don't be a fool!"
That nagging voice that Finley had argued with all his life, the one in a back room somewhere in his brain, shouted, "You should have listened to that guy. You know who that was?"
The eighth and uninvited soul, Finley A. Bliss, trudged up the light-stream, followed the others through the door, and then tripped into oblivion. Total darkness. No light, no people. No floor. Just suddenly falling through emptiness like a grain of sand somewhere in space beyond the Milky Way.
Finley Alan Bliss ceased to exist. Almost.

How Do You Make Readers Care about Your Characters?

Have you ever read a book or story  and put it down because you simply didn't care what happens next to the main characters? That is a HUGE flaw in writing! You don't want to do that, and neither do I.

This article by Natasha Lester is great, because she shares the 4 emotional elements she considers when writing a scene.

I believe that fear is at the heart of all good drama: what we are afraid of doing, or of not doing, what we are afraid of feeling, what we are afraid of learning, what we are afraid of losing, what we are afraid of loving.

-- Natasha Lester

I happen to love this useful emotions quadrant Lester uses when writing each scene. I'm going to whip I out and give it a try myself. Thanks, Ms. Lester! Read original article source here.

16 Rules for Fiction Writing from Kurt Vonnegut

Click for Member Home Page

What does Kurt Vonnegut say about writing fiction? Here are 16 quotes revealing his rules,  (see original source).:

16 Kurt Vonnegut Fiction Writing Rules graphic

1. Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.

2. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.

3. Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water.

4. Every sentence must do one of two things — reveal character or advance the action.

5. Start as close to the end as possible.

6. Be a sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them — in order that the reader may see what they are made of.

7. Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia.

8. Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as possible. To heck with suspense. Readers should have such complete understanding of what is going on, where and why, that they could finish the story themselves, should cockroaches eat the last few pages.

9. Find a subject you care about and which you in your heart feel others should care about.

10. Do not ramble.

11. Keep it simple. Simplicity of language is not only reputable, but perhaps even sacred.

12. Have guts to cut. Your rule might be this: If a sentence, no matter how excellent, does not illuminate your subject in some new and useful way, scratch it out.

13. Sound like yourself. The writing style which is most natural for you is bound to echo the speech you heard when a child.

14. Say what you mean. You should avoid Picasso-style or jazz-style writing, if you have something worth saying and wish to be understood.

15. Pity the readers. Our stylistic options as writers are neither numerous nor glamorous, since our readers are bound to be such imperfect artists.

16. You choose. The most meaningful aspect of our styles, which is what we choose to write about, is utterly unlimited.

Writing Advice for NaNoWriMo from Veronica Roth

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) partiipant badge 2014)

As a participant in NaNoWriMo, we get pep talks. This writing advice  from Divergent Series author Veronica Roth is outstanding, so I decided to share it.

See the original article source.

Veronica Roth Pep Talk for NaNoWriMo

My Dear NaNo-ers,

I don’t particularly like comparing novel writing to climbing a Veronica Rothmountain, because it’s been done, but let’s face it: it works. Look at this fairly standard map of plot structure:

I mean, it looks like a freaking mountain.

If you’re anything like me, you reach that “rising action” stage about halfway through your manuscript, lift your head to the heavens to see how much of the book is left, and consider camping out where you are for a while or even rolling back down to the bottom. This may happen to you on November 15 or somewhere thereabouts. I am here to tell you two things:

  1. Do not be alarmed. This is normal.
  2. Do not camp out, and do not climb back down.

There is a lot of writing advice floating around the Internet, and there are also a lot of “don’t bother with writing advice, just put your butt in a chair and work!” manifestos. (Which was my motto for the past year and a half, actually.) Some of this advice includes:

  • “Getting to know your character” exercises (questionnaires, quizzes, free-writing, etc.)
  • “Mapping out your plot” exercises (break down your plot into the plot structure diagram above, map out each scene and make sure each one shifts the story from a positive place to a negative one, or a negative place to a positive one, etc.)
  • “Prose and voice” exercises (read your manuscript out loud, never use adverbs, alternate short and long sentences, etc.)

There are also many discussions about whether you are a “pantser” (writing by the seat of your pants) or a “plotter” (mapping out your stories beforehand), someone who writes from beginning to end, or someone who jumps around in time, and so on.

Some of you might know exactly which one of those things you are—you have a process, you know which pieces of advice work for you, you have a routine—and some of you may feel hopelessly lost. My advice to both camps of people, from my (still admittedly few) climbs up manuscript mountain, is the same:

Let go of your process.

Let go of stressing out about your process.

Let go of finding your process.

Let go of all of it.

When you reach the place on Manuscript Mountain that makes you consider admitting defeat, and the tools you have used to get as far as you have are no longer working for you, consider using someone else’s tools. Pantser? Try plotting. Plotter? Try literally burning your outline (safely! In a trash can or something!). Perfectionist? Try writing the worst scene you can possibly muster. Strict beginning-to-end-er? Write whatever scene is burning a hole in your brain and fill in the gap later. Whatever you do, don’t hold so tightly to whatever writer identity you have formed for yourself that you can’t innovate, change, and grow.

It is not important that you stay the same writer you are now, or that you have a definite routine or pattern. I started my first book in the middle, with no outline, and finished my third book with a detailed one, written from beginning to end. I thought I knew what kind of writer I was, but ultimately I found those definitions limiting rather than freeing. If I can let them go, I can become whatever writer each story requires me to be.

What is important, far more than the definitions we cling to, is that we finish the stories we are burning to tell.

So, fill your writer toolbox with as many tools as you can, even if they seem silly or like they will never work for you. You don’t have to make detailed outlines, or fill out character questionnaires, or do free-writing, or keep a journal, or draw maps if you don’t want to. But it helps to have new tools to pick up if the old ones stop working for you.

And consider getting desperate. Desperate to write, desperate to get that story on the page, desperate to let the characters speak, and desperate to finish. Get so desperate that you will try anything to make it work. You have a deadline. It is November 30. You can do it. But you might have to throw all your preconceptions about yourself and your writing out the window.

No manuscript is perfect the first time through. You don’t need to worry about perfection right now. But you are participating in this magical month of generally antisocial behavior and potential caffeine overdose because you believe that pushing through a manuscript in a month will help you in some way, and that means you need the wild, thirsty freedom of a writer who will get to the end.

Don’t be a plotter or a pantser, a strict butt-in-chair person or an exercise-doer, a beginning-to-end-er or a time jumper—don’t be anything other than whatever you need to be to keep climbing.

And then, for the love of all things writing and book-related, revise the crap out of Manuscript Mountain.

Writing a Book: Your Book is a Door

"If your business is a house, your book is a door."

-- Ronda Del Boccio in Instant Author Formula

So many business owners who are thinking of writing a book get all in a twist about it, making it harder than it needs to be.

First and foremost, yes, you want to write a GOOD book...but that doesn't mean long.

IAF-Review-JaneGardener

When you have a simple recipe, you can become thet author of a book upon which you will feel proud to see your name with very little effort.

Here is a review of the book Instant Author Formula: 6 Simple Ways to Write a Book Fast.

See original source.

Got clarity that I don't have to wait to write the Ultimate Guide to Starting a Home Business; write a series instead!" March 16, 2014

I am going to write a book now after reading "Instant Author Formula". As Ronda says, my book is not my business";

it doesn't have to be the ultimate guide to my business. I need to get off my butt and write solving one problem with one solution with one book.

Writing THE BOOK on how to start a home business was stopping me as I have other priorities in my business. Rondo gave me clarity that I don't have to wait to write the Ultimate Guide to Home Business; I can write a small book helping others start a homebased business and get it out there to help others and then write a series of small books on further challenges in homebased business.

The "butt kicking" in the book as well as the simple templates for creating books quickly has helped me to put a "How-to" edition back on my marketing plan. I loved the analogy that if your business is the house, a book is a door that leads people into your business. Also, there is a great reminder that even a small book can have a great call to action for the reader which  can also lead them into your business.

A huge thank-you to Jane Gardner for this excellent review. She discovered the power of a small book that solves a problem.

Give your reader what they WNAT to buy, not what you think they SHOULD want!

Time for you to give that old "Do It" muscle a workout and become an author. You gain:

  • Instant credibility
  • VIP status
  • more leads
  • Media ops
  • and more

How Can I Write a GREAT Interview Book?

How Can I Write a GREAT Interview Book?

Interview books can be really good or a massive waste of life.

Before sharing what makes a great one, here is how to write a BORING, useless, bad interview book.

How to Write a BAD Interview Book

Bad Interview Book Tip #1 - Just put transcripts into print.

Few things irritate me more than a book that is nothing more than a bunch of "he said/she said" transcripts. I know loads of people do this, but don't you feel cheated if you buy one like that?

Bad Interview Book Tip #2 - Add nothing to the interviews.

The second most irritating thing is when an author slaps interviews together and leaves them as is without adding any value. You're supposed to be an expert guide, not a copy machine!

Bad Interview Book Tip #3 - Have nothing to offer beyond your book.

This is how to have empty pockets as an author. You won't get rich off of royalties, and you need more than just a book.

Writing Challenges

How to write a GREAT Interview Book

This advice comes from my book Instant Author Formula: 6 Simple Recipes for How to Write a Book FAST!, available from Amazon.

Instant Author Formula BOOK Cover

Remember YOU are the guide, not the interviewees.

Even if you're interviewing people who have a skill you do not, remember peop0le buy the book for more than just those interviews. They want a road map or guidance. You're the GPS. The interviewees are the points of interest.

Add something to each interview.

You can add a summary, a bulleted list of key points, action steps or other material to enrich the interview.

Have more than just a book.

Do you have an online course, DVD or other product? If not, you need to, because royalties might buy you a nice lunch each month but not much more. The point of being an author is using that book as leverage for your expertise, not as a major source of income.

Make sure your book looks like a real book.

Lots of newebie authors make their books like blogs, with spaces between each paragraph and no indentation at the start of paragraphs. While that's just fine for a blog, it screams "self published amateur". If you need help self publishing your book, check out I Am Published.

Instant Author Formula teaches  you step by step how to write 6 different types of nonfiction book that will help establish you as an expert and boost your business and reputation.

The book is on sale March 15-21, 2014 Regular price is $4.99 US. THe sale starts at 99 cents and rises during the week.

IAF will be in print later this year. Now you can read it on your Kindle or using a free Kindle app on any mobile device.

I wish you great success with your book and your legacy!

This is your brain on stories!

Who doesn't love a good story? You love a good read or a good movie...you roll your eyes when someone gets BORING when talking about their latest exploits.

#storytelling   definitely changes you.

Maybe you haven't thought of what happens in the brain, but a #story changes your brain, quite literally!

You get spooked easily after watching a horror movie.
You cry when hearing a story of loss.
You get mad watching or hearing a story in which the main character is mad.

Here's some insight in this article, the "Science of Storytelling"

The Science of Storytelling: Why Telling a Story is the Most Powerful Way to Activate Our Brains
A good story can make or break a presentation, article, or conversation. But why is that? When Buffer co-founder Leo Widrich started to market his product through stories instead of benefits and bullet points, sign-ups went through the roof. Here he shares the science of why storytelling is so uniquely powerful.
