Location Name Generators

This entry is part of 2 in the series Name Generators

Looking for a name for your kingdom, realm, or tavern? These generators may be precisely the inspiration you seek.

Name Generators BLog Series

Realm Name Generator

You can select Earldoms, Duchies, and large or small areas. Here are some of the names that arose using the small area option:

  • Mystic Necromancer's Earldom
  • Orange Sunset State
  • Soft Duchy
  • Unholy Duchy of the Vine

Adventurous Places

I would call this a Quest Location Generator, because these are the sorts of names where your hero might go to right a wrong. Ready for an exciting place name where adventures happen? Here are a few examples that came up for me.

  • Battlefield of Visions
  • Cave of Oblivion
  • Decrepit Tunnels of Desolation
  • Maze of Secrets
  • Sanctum of Crystal

Those are great quest destinations!

Outer Plane Generator

Do you need a far away land with a mysterious name? Try this name propagator. Here are a few it offered me:

  • Domain of the Damned
  • Dry Cities of Suffering
  • False Wilderness of the Unnamed
  • First Region
  • Fourth Terrifying Hall

I like False Wilderness of the Unnamed. Sounds mysterious.

Rooms and Locations Generator

Sometimes you just need a room or structure rather than a realm or town. Here are some cool names it spat out for me:

  • Cloister of Deception
  • Dead Threshold of Hoards
  • Frozen Gallery
  • Gold Watchtower
  • Hideaway of Pits and Lanterns
  • Infamous Vault

I like Dead Threshold of Hoards. Really sick stuff would have to happen there. Infamous Vault is cool too, but it needs an "of something" after it, like Infamous Vault of Destinies.

Tavern Names

Where do your characters go for a quick pint after work, or to drown their sorrows? Here are some of the local watering hole names that came up for me:

  • The Funny Priestess
  • The Gory Sword Inn
  • The Joyous Bawd's Tavern
  • The Morose Footpad Saloon
  • The New Casque Saloon

Did these location names spark your muse into action? Did you stumble across a different generator you'd like to share? Please add your musings or great finds in the comments section.

Character Name Generators

This entry is part 1 of 2 in the series Name Generators

Have you ever been writing a story (whether short or novel length) and found yourself stuck for a name of a character? I certainly have. Sometimes I have a first name and need a surname. Sometimes I want a fantasy- or an evil sounding name.

Name Generators BLog Series

So here are some name generators of different types that might be just what you seek. I hope you find htem useful. And if you come across a different one that isn't included in this list, please DO let me know by adding it to the comments using Facebook or Google+.

Fantasy Names

When I opened this generator, these are a few of the names it gave me:

  • Brand Ravendread
  •  Dirk Seraphdream
  •  Drake Loreguard
  •  Eden Griffonvictor
  • < Grail Chaostotem

Quick Character Namer

This isn't sophisticated, but it might give you a good idea. You can choose a male or female name and say how many names to provide. You could always mix and match. This uses common names in the USA based on census data.

  • Grace Mills
  •  Ivy Diaz
  •  Jillian Carson
  •  Joy Zelma Moon
  •  Juanita Mattie Chen
  •  Kathy Trevino
  •  Keisha Tasha Sanders
  •  Kristine Fuller

Weird Name Generator

I write fantasy and paranormal quite a bit, and next time I need a strange sounding name, I might try this one. Maybe one of these will be what you seek:

  • The Seventh Profane Queen Who Desires Madness
  • The Seventh Rogue That Burns the Monk
  • The Sly Bloodstained Sultanna
  • The Studious Forgotten Czarina That Burns Clouds
  • Turquoise of the Celestial Tower

Not sure why the fixation on burning clouds, but it just might tickle your muse. My personal fav from this short list is The Studious Forgotten Czarina That Burns Clouds. Maybe I'll use that as a writing prompt and write a story about her.

Evil Sounding Names

These names are inspired by J. R. R. Tolkein's body of work. Her are a few samples:

  • Durormat
  • Faua
  • Glard
  • Gwengoturathae
  • Ingo
  • Itungu
  • Lariauindua
  • Ldugon
  • Lonalongila
  • Matur

I'm using one of these for a Ghoul in a humorous paranormal sequel to A Tasty Morsel.

Demon Name Generator

I have a feeling I'll be using this one to help inspire me for the series around my "pantser" demon hunter Kassidy. Here are a few samples.

  • Hasatuzs
  • Zsuesason
  • Tonserolon
  • Lasoron
  • Nuhsatoah
  • Lais
  • Ponis
  • Olashadea

Western Names

I love looking at these generators, even though I don't write westerns. Here are a few from when I ran it to write this post:

  • Angela "Thinker" Jensen
  • Deborah "Gravedigger" Stevens
  • Gambling Reynolds
  • Joanne "Shooter" Payne
  • Lillie "Sunset" Beck
  • Lost Adams

My personal favorite from this list is Deborah "Gravedigger" Stevens. If you're into writing westerns, I bet you could craft a short story around a female grave digger, or one who doesn't dig them but has that nickname.

Wrestler Names

This one's also good for warriors/fighters or bad guys. I thought this was so funnyt that I had to share it. You don't need to be writing a story about WWF to use a name like any of these:

  • Q. O. "The Princess" Turner
  • Sandra "Unknowable Venus" Johnson
  • Stephanie "Blessed Goddess" Scott
  • Sue "The Word" Pierce

I like Stephanie "Blessed Goddess" Scott. Imagine a fighter with that appellation. Fun.Those should help you find character names. I'll post generators for places, animals, etc. in future posts, so watch the "Name Generators" series for more.

Please share this all over the social web!

So much about writing is an inner game. There's the writing part, sure, but it's the head stuff that tends to cause issues.

I saw this infographic some time ago, and it's just as powerful today. Thanks to Kristen Joy, the Book Ninja, for this infographic full of inspirational thoughts for budding authors!!

MindShift: Temporarily Disconnected

Click for Member Home Page

One of my favorite movies when I need a laugh is What About Bob. It's hilarious. A psychiatric patient unravels his new shrink. You watch the patient get well and the doctor sink into madness.

The past couple weeks have bene a wild ride for me, and I keep thinking of a line the patient Bob Wiley makes:

"If I find someone who I don't think likes me, I just treat them like they are a telephone, and i say, 'This one's just temporarily disconnected.'"

"If I find someone who I don't think likes me, I just treat them like they are a telephone, and i say, 'This one's just temporarily disconnected.'"

Inspration Doesn’t Come at the Keyboard: NaNoWriMo Day 9

Click for Member Home Page

This weekend I had commitments that meant being away from home much of the day Did this keep me from keeping up writing my novel? No. It simply means planning.

Ronda's set of Writers Blocks

Whatever your writing goal, whether you're in a competition like National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), a publisher's deadline, or a self-chosen goal, you'll soon discover that life happens.

A Tasty Morsel paranormal fantasy novella cover

There will be family commitments, book signings, dinners with friends, going to the store, taking care of your family, and so forth.

I knew this weekend would probably be lighter on writing, so I worked more during those days I could so as to stay on track. Simple as that.

Here's my progress toward that 50,000 word (200 page) goal for the month of November:

Yesterday, I had the book signing at the library. Today I had a lovely visit with friends. And here's what you need to know:

Inspiration doesn't come from forcing yourself to sit at the keyboard. It comes from living life! Then you transmute what you discover into words.

My novella The Assassin ad the Prince came entirely from a dream. I scribbled down the gist of it as soon as I woke  up, then in a few  hours, it was a complete story. This can happen to you. Perhaps it already has.

Inspiration for A Tasty Morsel came from a trip to Dogwood Canyon. Our guide said a cave  had just been discovered. We saw an old elk who had a horn growing over his eye. Those two elements made it into the tale.

My current novel in progress, They All Died Smiling, started as a short story that did not win a contest. The judge wrote me and said I had the basis for a novel. I'm finally getting that tale expanded as it should be. The idea for the book came from a "dolly girl" hair dresser , more fake than real.

So don't think sitting at tje desk pulling out your hair will bring you a great idea. Go out and live life as you keep writing.t

How Do You Keep Writing Momentum? NaNoWriMo Day 4

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) partiipant badge 2014)

I'm part of NANoWriMo 2014, writing a 50,000 word novel in November.

Today I was thinking about the power of momentum.Momentum

Ome days, a writer will sail past their writing goal in the throes of creative fervor (or caffeine overdose). Other days, Life Happens. One writer had a bad cold and couldn't think. Another had unexpected company. Another had a pipe burst.

Naturally, some days will flow and others will be harder, but that doesn't mean you let up on yourself.

It's still possible to keep a good flow going, regardless of life.

Here are a few things I like to do to ensure a successful writing day:

1. Leave off where I KNOW precisely what comes next.

2. Leave off mid-scene, not at an ending.

3. Go back to fill in whatever needs fleshing out from yesterday's session. (I call it Spiral Writing).

4. Work on something related to the book, like a r filling in backstory or writing about one or more of the places where the action occurs.

All these things are considered within the rules of NaNoWriMo, as long as they're related to the book you're writing. Any of these techniques will keep you moving.

Today's Tease from They All Died Smiling:

Meet Russell Higgins, friend of Kassidy (our hero).

Russell and Kass went to the same school and hung out together with a cluster of other youth, including Randy, whom Kass married.

Russ always carried a torch for  Kassidy, as the saying goes, but since she and Randy becae an item, he felt like he never had a chance.

They grew up in the Missouri Ozarks and went to a rural school in a little place called Blue Eye. Whereas Kass was the consummate country girl, Russ craved big city life. He never figured to meet her in Chicago.

Since he always wanted to play spy games, Kass figured he would end up working with the CIA. Turns out she was close. He is a new FBI agent as the story opens. He wants to climb the ladder and hopefully move on to New York or D. C.

As They All Died Smiling opens, Kass unknowingly sees him when she sees him disembarking a subway train when she's  on her way home from work. He's well muscled with a great smile. She calls him Mr. Hottie in her mind.

The next day, they end up in the same restaurant. She recognizes him, and they will have all sorts of interesting encounters. He manages to put her down within minutes of their reunion.

That's all for today. I am staying on track to write a 200 page novel in 30 days, and I'm not losing ground!

You can watch my progress here: If you're in nano and want to be a buddy, feel free to add me.

Kurt Vonnegut Quote: Who Do You Pretend to Be?

I love this Kurt Vonnegut Quote:

"We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful what we pretend to be." - Kurt Vonnegut (inspirational quote on pretending)

It got me thinking about the various masks and roles we each wear.

I once heard an author who was painfully shy speak to a roomful of writers. He said as long as he was wearing his cowboy hat, he could pretend to be confident, and thus that is how he felt when speaking.

We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful what we pretend to be. - Kurt Vonegut

I would never have known he was that uncomfortable, because he came across so well.

Who Do You Pretend to Be around Mom?

Do you act differently when you're with your mom than with your best friend? Probably, at least to some degree.

That could be a mild example of pretending. Depending on your mom and how you want to be perceived.

Do you have a different work persona?

Sure, you're relaxed at home, but some people definitely have a whole new way of being at work.

Do you pretend to be the efficient one? THe climber?

One person I know pretends to be the person at the hot center of it all when she most assuredly is not. And yet, by pretending to be in the heart of the action, she moves herself in that direction little by little. Maybe in a few weeks or months, she will indeed be at the core.

Who Are You Pretending to Be?

Everyone wears different masks. Everyone behaves differently with certain people or in certain situation. That's what Vonnegut is getting at with this quote.

Are you pretending to be small and inconsequential? The truth is, you are a magnificent miracle! Never shrink and cower into someone less than who you are.

Pre-Tend

Since you will become that which you pretend to be, why not pre-tend consciously.

Pre means before, and TEND has several meanings, including lead, be inclined toward a behavior or action,  and journey.

This fits beautifully into a powerful way of being.

TEND your mindset.  Lead your mind along a journey toward purpose and abundance...even before you see evidence of your desires.

TEND your words. Lead your words so they take you on a journey to clear and loving communication, even when you may be considering spreading hurtful words or gossip. Put a guardian at your lips and speak words of love and power.

TEND your actions.  Lead yourself along a course of action that rings you health, prosperity and love, even before you see evidence of flourishing.

Because what you see, you cause  to be. What you resist persists..

PRE-TEND well, dear friend!

Follow your BLISS,

Ronda Del Boccio, the Story Lady, bestselling author and speaker, this time helping you pre-tend your life into being amazing!

Writing Prompt: Let Music Inspire Your Short Story

Mindshift: Can You Eat a Highly Intelligent Being?

Can you eat a creature that is as intelligent as a human?

What you are about to read may shift how you think about what you devour.

A comment someone left on 1 of my Facebook photos got me thinking.  I posted a picture of the bacon caramel brownie bites, pictured below and someone said, "Pigs are almost as intelligent as humans. I cannot eat anything from a pig."

Caramel Bacon Brownies (these are bites for competition tasting, but you can cut normal sized ones for your people.)

OK well just make brownies then...sheesh!

But it got me thinking. I responded that all life is sacred and all beings intelligent. If you're going to refrain from eating intelligence, you'll neither eat any food nor drink any water.

All life is sacred, and indeed, I consider the flora and fauna of this world far more knowing than any human.

You may protest, "but broccoli can't build a building or run a government."

True, but broccoli always stays true to its nature. It never strays from its innate purpose. Life responds to its conditions and finds a way to flourish where it can. Your broccoli never decides the water nearby isn't flowing to its liking, nad it never tries to reroute the stream.

Only  humans stray from their path, from their life purpose. Only humans fail to follow the bent of their nature on a regular basis. Only humans need to be led back to their true path.

Only humans destroy the natural order in which all other creatures thrive harmoniously.

So, whether you choose to be a vegetarian or omnivore,  nourish yourself on the intelligent life forms you choose to eat. You may decide to eat or not to eat any food, but do not let intelligence be your guide, because ompared to the wonders of this world, humans are puny and ignorant..

Inspirational Thoughts on Knowing Your Value: Would You Do This For Nothing?

Inspirational Thoughts on Knowing Your Value: Would You Do This For Nothing?

by Ronda Del Boccio

A recent conversation inspired me to share these thoughts on value.

Value yourself - Miracle Mindshift Month

Please do this  –  but we won't pay you.

A friend of mine asked me if I would run the webinar technology for a highly successful entrepreneur he knows.

He didn't want my expertise as an author, mentor, speaker, or entrepreneur. He did not want me to facilitate the conversation or interview the panel of experts.

The webinar in question has nothing to do with the focus of my business, or with my life purpose. (My business is perfectly aligned with my purpose.)

He only wanted me to be there to do a task I would hire out rather than do myself. My thought was to outsource this to a reliable friend I know who does such things.

And heaping yet more insult, the businessman facilitating the call didn't want to pay for the skill of having someone run the tech, even though he can well afford a few bucks to hire the help.

I was actually FURIOUS!

Running a webinar panel is indeed a skill. And even if I were to be the laborer for this, why should I not be compensated? I've long since paid my dues and learned how to steward my time and skills.

Why would I spend 2 hours volunteering my time to a high income earner who can afford to pay rather than doing something that would make me money or otherwise please me?

No. I have skills. I have value. You do not have permission to use or abuse me.

How does this relate to you?

This encounter made me think of YOU, because all too often, I see my mentoring students do things outside your skills and comfort just because someone asked.

Sure, I love bartering, and I love helping a friend, but I am really sick and tired of people trying to take advantage and get something for nothing.

After that, this same person suggested I offer coaching (which I don't do since I'm an author mentor, not a coach) for a ridiculously low rate.

I was so insulted. It's clear I've had a major SHIFT !

Mark Twain Inspirational Quotes for Authors: Write for Critical Acclaim or for My Ideal Readers?

Mark Twain Inspirational Quotes for Authors: Write for Critical Acclaim or for Readers?

Some advice is ageless and timeless. Mark Twain has some inspirational quotes that can help the authors of today.

Thumbnail for version as of 05:20, 12 January 2005

Any author considering how to write a book can get caught up in seeking the prestige of critical praise for your book, such as being featured in prestigious lists, praised in a newspaper review, or touted as one of the best books of the year.

I found an excellent “on this day” post on The Writers Almanac with Garrison Keillor that made me think of you.

Because on this day in 1864, one of Mark Twain's most famous book was published, and the major newspapers of the time were not at all pleased with it. I never knew it was even banned by one library.

Mark Twain's experience with his book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn provides an excellent example of who your REAL critic needs to be.

Please read this short passage from The Writers Almanac :

Although it was a big seller and got great reviews in England, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn got poor reviews in America.

A San Francisco paper said that it was dreary, and "nor is it [a book] that most parents who want a future of promise for their young folks would select without some hesitation."

  • A Boston paper said that it was "so flat, as well as coarse, that nobody wants to read it";
  • another that it was "pitched in one key, and that is the key of a vulgar and abhorrent life";
  • and a New York paper that it was "cheap and pernicious stuff."
  • In 1885, it was banned by the public library of Concord, Massachusetts, and Louisa May Alcott explained, "If Mr. Clemens cannot think of something better to tell our pure-minded lads and lasses, he had best stop writing for them."

But Twain said, "The public is the only critic whose judgment is worth anything at all."

Three months after Huck Finn was published, in early May of 1864, Webster had sold 51,000 copies of the book, and as of today, an estimated 20 million copies have been sold.

(See original source for this quotation)

What can I learn from the Mark Twain inspirational quotes?

I hope you will write your book with these things in mind:

  • What does my reader desire?
  • What will make my reader's life better?
  • How can I give my reader an amazing experience?

When you do that well, your reader will share how much better her life is, or how awesome the story was with all her friends.

THAT is what you truly want, because people who matter –  your ideal readers –  telling their friends and contacts how awesome your advice or your story is will carry your message into many more hearts and lives than a few reviews.
