Show Notes - Links & Resources from Today's Episode

This episode tells you a bit more about me, why this podcast, and most important of all - the benefit to YOU!

This show is for messengers - for visionaries who have a strong desire to bring your message into the world and create a legacy.

My Story in brief

I am mostly blind, so audio is the PERFECT medium for me to reach YOU!

As a young child, I made up skits and stories with my toys. As a lover of stories, I began writing stories and plays.

While in high school, a friend introduced me to Dr. Who, and I've been HOOKED ever since! (and yes, high school was quite a few years ago!)

As a natural wordsmith and teacher, thinking like an entrepreneur did NOT come naturally to me, so I had to learn. AND when I learned the ropes, I HAD to make things fun and easy for visionaries like YOU.

Inspirational Quotes on Your Being

When I recorded this week's inspirational quotes from the Persian mystic Hafiz, I cried. Yes - you will hear me being choked up on the show.

Because this quote so much expresses my intention with all my spirit work. Here it is:

Chris' Story

Chris Downs became a #1 bestselling author with his book How to Grow Great Heirloom Tomatoes, and he attracted the attention of Grit Magazine, which is a top publication in the area of farming. His bestseller status was a big reason why they asked him to be a regular contributor to their site.

Help to Publish a Book on Kindle

There are a couple of considerations around how to publish a book on Kindle. The first is that while publishing is free, you may want some hand-holding through the journey. Why spend more time than  you need to spend?

The second is the book marketing coach part. Simply  having a book up on Amazon doesn't mean you'll get a stampede of buyers devouring your every word.

You will want to promote your book (both during its free run and beyond), or it won't sell. There's no shortcut.

Go ahead and sign up with Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). You'll do that anyway. It's such a fabulous program that frees you to be in charge of your own publishing.

Get help with everything from navigating KDP to formatting your book to Amazon Kindle free books promotions inside the Effortless Digital Publishing program.

Book Marketing Coach: Can I Build Buzz for My Book While Still Writing?

This is a great article courtesy of < CreateSpace about how to build buzz for your book while still writing it. As an author mentor, I also serve as a book marketing coach< .b>, and there’s no time like NOW to build anticipation for your upcoming book!

Book Marketing coach Shares How to Buzz Your Work in Progress!

Far too many authors think that the time to build anticipation and buzz for your book is AFTER it's published.

NO –  the time to start building anticipation and buzz is while you're still writing it! The following article makes an excellent point, and I hope you will take heed AND take action!

Book Marketing Coach providing writing advice, book marketing tips

Building Buzz Before You Publish

Posted by CreateSpaceBlogger on Mar 11, 2013 5:09:04 AM

Do you have an idea for your next book? If not an idea, maybe you just have that itch to start writing another book. Either way, idea or itch, now is the time to start talking about it online. This is your opportunity to build buzz and anticipation.

Writing a book is a gut-wrenching, life-affirming, tear-producing, spine-tingling, smile-launching struggle. It's a process that can leave you feeling elated on Tuesday and bring you crashing back to reality on Thursday. That it will have its ups and downs is as sure as the sunrise.

But that process gives authors an opportunity to breathe life into a book before it's published. It makes the book more than a book; it makes it a journey. You can take that journey with your readers by talking about the ups and downs on your website, blog, or social media.

Those who follow your path likely will be anxious to reach the destination and read the published product. Plus, the journey might be something they share with their friends and family, which can lead to even more readers awaiting your book.

I'm not talking about revealing plot points and twists or any other essential story elements. Talk about the story in broad strokes. This is more about the creative process as a whole.

I've even seen authors put out technical questions about science and history that are crucial to their stories. They involved the readers in the actual creation process.

Keep in mind, however, that there is a danger of saturating your readers with too much inside information, so you want to be careful and not bury them with details. Give them just enough to keep them interested.

For the most part, you want to give them a peek inside without giving them a full-fledged tour.

Don't miss this opportunity to build pre-publication buzz. Take your readers with you on your writing journey!

-Richard

Richard Ridley is an award-winning author and paid CreateSpace contributor. See original article source

The best point in the article

They involved the readers in the actual creation process.

The more a reader is involved, the more she is engaged and invested in the journey, and the more likely she is to buy the book.

Expand Your Reach

One of my favorite tools helps an author expand your reach. When you write an article on your blog, you want people to read it. And not just the people who already know and love you, but people who are your ideal reader but don't know you yet!

Social Buzz Club has a free level that empowers you to share good stuff with your network from other people and also to have them share yours.

It's a great community, and I've gained new readers, new friends and loads of good shares by being involved.

I upgraded so I can share directly to my Facebook page.

How Can Publishing a Book, Top Authors, and Goodreads Bring More Readers?

Who are the must read authors for entrepreneurs, professionals & busines owners? Find out what bestselling author Dave Kerpen says – and consider whom you would put on a top list.

How Can Publishing a Book, Top Authors, and Goodreads Bring More Readers?

Publishing a book – whether self publishing, going through a small press or having a big house publisher –  means a lot of “leg work” for any author.

Part of publishing is developing relationships with your audience and with big players in your niche. It's hard to separate the key aspects of writing, publishing, and promoting your book.

consider the power of connecting with the top name authors serving your same audience.

Here's an interesting top authors list from a bestselling business author, Dave Kerpen  As you see these authors, consider who you feel are the top authors in your niche.

11 Must-Read Authors For Every Professional

Dave Kerpenby Dave Kerpen:

Dave Kerpen is CEO, Likeable Local, NY Times Best-Selling Author & Keynote Speaker

Great authors teach us, motivate us, inspire us, and make us think. For professionals, great authors can change the way we work, help us realize new opportunities, build a business, and lead others.

My recent post, 9 Business Books That Will Change Your Life, led to over 1,200 comments from readers agreeing or disagreeing with the list, and adding their own favorites. So I've followed up that post with this list of prolific, impactful authors, each of which has written at least three business books. Below are my 11 must-read authors, along with six more up-and-coming authors worth reading:

1. Seth Godin

Godin is my favorite author and has been an inspiration to me as a writer, marketer, entrepreneur and thinker. Permission Marketing is my favorite Godin book, but I've enjoyed so many of them, as Godin always challenges readers to think about things in a new way. Other must-read books of his include Purple Cow, Tribes, Linchpin, and Poke The Box. His latest and boldest, The Icarus Deception, calls on people to look at their work as an artist does.

2. Patrick Lencioni

Lencioni is the owner of a management consulting firm and a prolific author and speaker, having written ten books to date. He writes simple, well-told fables, all with leadership and management lessons to take away. His most famous book is The Five Dysfunctions of a Team - and that is a great one, as are The Advantage, Death by Meeting, and Getting Naked. But my favorite is The Three Big Questions for a Frantic Family, because it addresses not only business, but leading a family, something most important to me.

3. Malcolm Gladwell

Gladwell is a longtime writer for The New Yorker magazine and the author of four uber-successful, thoughtful books which stimulate not only business professionals, but all of his readers, to think about things in a new way. Named by Time Magazine in 2005 as one of the 100 most influential people in the world, Gladwell's works include The Tipping Point, Outliers, Blink and What the Dog Saw.

4. Jim Collins

Collins is both a teacher and a student of great companies - having devoted the better part of his life to studying, analyzing and writing about the differences between good companies and great ones - companies that perish and those that endure. His books are all thoroughly researched and his theses are data-driven. Collins' works include Good to Great, Built to Last, How the Mighty Fall and Great by Choice.

5. Daniel Pink

Pink is truly one of the great business minds of our time. Having now authored four provocative books, Pink was named one of the Top 50 business thinkers of the world by Harvard Business Review in 2011. His most recent book, To Sell is Human, is particularly appropriate for salespeople. But Pink's previous Drive and A Whole New Mind are classics as well.

6. Tim Ferriss

Ferriss is an incredibly successful author and speaker, despite apparently not working on any one thing more than four hours a week. The ultimate "work smart over work hard" guy, Ferriss's first book, The Four Hour Workweek, has sold many millions of copies and been translated to 35 languages. The concept for professionals has proved so popular that Ferriss followed up Workweek with The Four Hour Body and The Four Hour Chef.

7. Ken Blanchard

Blanchard is a long-time writer, speaker and consultant and one of the top leadership experts in the world. Like Lencioni, he writes using stories and simple, easy-to-understand language. Three of his many books, the One Minute Manager, Raving Fans, and The One Minute Entrepreneur all deeply influenced the way I've run our businesses and helped clients grow their businesses.

8. Stephen Covey

Covey wrote a plethora of excellent leadership and inspirational books, but the one you've likely heard of is The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. This book single-handedly changed the way millions of people live their lives, at work and beyond. The SPEED of Trust and The Leader in Me are two more good ones. Covey's books are excellent reads if you're looking for inspiration beyond your job. Sadly, Covey passed away last year.

9. Peter Drucker

Drucker, the 2nd posthumous member of this list, passed away in 2005, but he was considered the management expert of the 20th century, authoring over 25 books. The teacher, reporter, philosopher and consultant was perhaps best known for mentoring longtime General Electric CEO Jack Welch. His books included The Effective Executive, Managing the Nonprofit Organization, and The Five Most Important Questions You Will Ever Ask About Your Organization.

10. Jeffrey Gitomer

Gitomer may have been a college dropout, but his books have helped many a salesperson make an incredible living. His books are small, easy to read, and packed full of both inspiration and practical advice. My favorite is the Little Red Book Of Selling, but others include Customer Satisfactions Is Worthless, Customer Loyalty is Priceless, Little Gold Book of YES! Attitude, and The Sales Bible.

11. John Maxwell

Maxwell is a longtime leadership expert, speaker and coach who has sold a remarkable 19 million books. His books inspire better leadership skills and communication skills. My favorite is The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership; other noteworthy books include The 5 Levels of Leadership, Developing the Leader Within You, How Successful People Think, The 360 Degree Leader, and Everyone Communicates, Few Connect.

The above 11 are all must-read authors for professionals.
Their many books have stood the test of time and continue to sell millions of copies. As I looked for great business authors, though, I was devastated by the dearth of women authors - plus I wanted to introduce you to a few great authors you may not have read yet. Here, then, are six more terrific authors worth reading, including three awesome female authors:

1. Sheryl Sandberg

Sandberg, the famous and at times controversial Chief Operating Officer of Facebook just launched her first book: Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead. The guaranteed bestseller has already created a lot of buzz, and is worth a read, whether you're a woman or a man.

2. Guy Kawasaki

I am proud to call Kawasaki a mentor, and he easily could have made the list above. His latest work, APE: Author, Publisher, Entrepreneur is a must-read for all authors and wanna-be authors. Other excellent books include The Art of the Start, Enchantment, Rules for Revolutionaries, and Reality Check.

3. Ekaterina Walter

Walter is a new author and a long time speaker and social strategist for Intel. Her first book, Think Like Zuck, inspired me so much I bought copies for my staff at Likeable. I have a strong feeling there's more to come.

4. Erik Qualman

You may not have heard of Qualman yet, but you may be amongst the 5 million people who have seen his "Socialnomics" videos on YouTube. Qualman's first book of the same name, Socialnomics, is an excellent read, as is his newest, Digital Leader.

5. Meg Cadoux Hirshberg

Hirschberg is the wife of Stonyfield CEO Gary Hirshberg, and writes extensively for INC Magazine on entrepreneurship and family. I whole-heartedly recommend her first book, For Better Or For Work, not only for entrepreneurs but for their spouses and families.

6. Michael Maddock

Maddock is an entrepreneur, inventor and innovation expert. My favorite of his three books is Free The Idea Monkey, which is great for both the idea people and the operators who help make those ideas actually happen.

---

Those are 17 of my favorite authors- although I've read dozens more I've loved. I'm also an author of course, and I've written a couple of books that I hope have inspired people- Likeable Social Media, about the role of social media in today's society and how organizations can best leverage it, and, recently, Likeable Business, about how to leverage 11 simple principles of customer-centric, staff-centric leadership to succeed in today's social-business world.

Now, I'd love to know YOUR favorite business authors. Which of these authors have you read? What other authors of business books have changed YOUR lives? What authors belong on this list, who have inspired YOU to become a better business person, leader and human being? Let me know in the comments here - and happy reading!

Does Self Publishing a Book Mean I Will Never Get a Major Publishing Deal?

Sometimes authors or would-be authors have fear around self publishing, fearing that self publishing means no publisher will ever look at you. Well, here’s proof that this is not necessarily true!

Does Self Publishing a Book Mean I Will Never Get a Major Publishing Deal?

Would-be authors sometimes express fear about self publishing a book. “Doesn't that mean I will never get a publishing deal?”

Whether or not you will ever get a major publishing deal is not for me to say. My crystal ball has a mind of its own, and she tends to show me things happening on other planets.

Here is an example of how self publishing a book paid off big-time for one author. Stick with me afterwards for some helpful hints for YOU.

Stay Tuned: A Self-Published Book About TV Gets a Major Publishing Pick-Up

By DAVE ITZKOFF

In the course of chronicling the modern-day history of television, the author Alan Sepinwall has made a bit of history himself, becoming the rare self-published author to be picked up by a major press. On Wednesday, it was announced that the Touchstone imprint of Simon & Schuster had acquired his well-regarded book “The Revolution Was Televised,” which Mr. Sepinwall put out late last year.

In this book (which is subtitled “The Cops, Crooks, Slingers and Slayers Who Changed TV Drama Forever”) Mr. Sepinwall, a television critic for the Web site hitfix.com, looks at the impact that shows like “The Sopranos” and “Mad Men” and show runners like David Chase and Matthew Weiner have had in reinvigorating the hour-long dramatic format.

Reviewing “The Revolution Was Televised” for The New York Times in December, Michiko Kakutani wrote that Mr. Sepinwall combined “smart, fair-minded assessments meant to provoke discussion” and interviews with creative talent, producers and executives to provide “a terrific book”; she also named it one of her 10 favorite books of 2012.

As with many of the TV success stories he writes about, Mr. Sepinwall encountered several “no”s before he finally heard “yes.”

Mr. Sepinwall said in a telephone interview on Wednesday that Touchstone had been one of the publishers he met with when he was shopping his proposal for “The Revolution Was Televised” about a year ago, though the project was turned down then.

“The proposal wound up being a little bit different from the book I wrote, and so I don’t necessarily blame them for passing at the time,” said Mr. Sepinwall, who planned to draw mostly from reporting he had already done on his site.

“When I got mostly rejections and one sort-of offer that I wasn’t crazy about it, I decided I’m going to go this route,” he said, referring to his strategy to self-publish the book. “The next thing I knew, I was doing fresh interviews with everybody – I’m not exactly sure how I had time to do that.”

After his book was reviewed in The Times and elsewhere, Mr. Sepinwall said he was contacted again by Touchstone, which was now interested in acquiring it.

“I like the idea that the book could exist in brick-and-mortar stores, could be on college syllabi,” he said. “I was pleased with the idea of being able to go back to the very beginning of the project.” He declined to provide exact sales figures for the book’s self-published release but said they were “well beyond my wildest expectations.”

Lauren Spiegel, an editor at Touchstone who acquired “The Revolution Was Televised” for the imprint, said of Mr. Sepinwall, “I was already in the bag for him, and have been such a fan for a long time.”

Touchstone is planning its release of “The Revolution Was Televised” “as soon as we can,” she said, with a paperback edition planned for the early spring and an e-book edition possibly coming earlier.

A version of this article appeared in print on 01/04/2013, on page C2 of the NewYork edition with the headline: Self-Published Book Gets a Major Deal.

Is Self Publishing Dominating the Publishing Industry?

The publishing industry has changed. What do the ISBN agency Bowker numbers show about self publishing say? Find out, and know how to make the most of it!

Is Self Publishing Dominating the Publishing Industry?

Self publishing has grown up. No longer whispered about and treated with all the respect one might show a drug addict, today, self publishing is a respectable and much more accessible alternative to its snobby big brother, New York publishing.

I'll Push You Steer book on the shelves at Barnes & Noble

Following are some amazing statistics about the growth of self publishing from a leading researcher. I have made some slight formatting changes and underlined key points to help you get the most from this information.:

Self-Publishing Sees Triple-Digit Growth in Just Five Years, Says Bowker®

CreateSpace, Smashwords and Author Solutions dominate infrastructure landscape

New Providence, NJ - October 24, 2012 - The number of self-published books produced annually in the U.S. has nearly tripled, growing 287 percent since 2006, and now tallies more than 235,000 print and “e” titles, according to a new analysis of data from Bowker® Books In Print and Bowker® Identifier Services.

The research explores the dramatic U.S. growth of an area once relegated to the fringes of publishing. It finds that while production increases are occurring in both print and e-book formats, the latter is driving the greatest percentage gains. It also shows that while self-publishing may seem like a cottage industry, it is dominated by large firms that offer publishing services to individual authors.

Self-publishing is now supported by a sophisticated and highly accessible support structure,” said Beat Barblan, Director of Identifier Services for Bowker, an affiliate of information powerhouse ProQuest.

“It’s provided everyone who has a story to tell with a method for sharing it and leveled the playing field to an unprecedented degree. This is no longer just vanity presses at work – self-publishing is out of the dark corners and making its way into the mainstream.

Notable success stories include a number of self-published authors landing their titles onto the prestigious New York Times bestseller list for ebook fiction.

Bowker’s research into self-publishing was prompted by an earlier study that showed 2011’s 148,424 self-published print books represented about 43 percent of that year’s total traditional print output and contributed to the first significant expansion in print production since 2007.

While print accounts for 63 percent of self-published books, e-books are gaining fast.

E-book production in 2011 was 87,201, up 129 percent over 2010. Print grew 33 percent in the same period.

While self-publishing is a DIY undertaking, Bowker’s analysis shows its infrastructure is made up of a handful of large firms. In 2011,

  • CreateSpace dominated the print segment, supporting the creation of 58,412 titles (39 percent of self-published print books).
  • Smashwords topped the e-book producers with 40,608 titles (nearly 47 percent of total self-published e-books).
  • The combined divisions of Author Solutions (part of Penguin Group) produced a total of 47,094 titles and
  • Lulu Enterprises checks in with 38,005 titles.
  • The Bowker analysis shows that beyond these four players, no company has more than 10 percent of market share.
  • Small presses, a category that is defined as publishers who have produced 10 or fewer books, accounted for 34,107 self-published titles -- 21,256 print and 12,851 e-books -- in 2011.

Print book production by small presses increased more than 74 percent between 2006 and 2011 -- hearty growth that’s dwarfed by CreateSpace’s 1702 percent increase during the same period.

While marketing their works remains the next great hurdle for self-published authors, Bowker research points to major influencers within their control.

Bowker surveys of book consumer habits show that authors can effectively reach more readers with online excerpts, retailer recommendations and customer reviews.

Bowker is the official ISBN Agency for the United States and its territories. The Books In Print® database derives a valuable portion of its information from these ISBN assignments, providing the nation’s most comprehensive view of book production. Writers, What’s Stopping You from Self Publishing Your Book?

Times are changing! It used to be that self publishing was only for vanity, very expensive, and a bad idea. Not so now! Let this article hearten you and share some tips to be successful when you publish a book

I remember when I first started thinking about publishing a book about 7 years ago. The rampant feeling then was, "if you can't get a REAL publisher to publish your book, it must not be worth anything."

The times, they are a-changin'!

Now, for most authors who come to me for mentoring, I highly recommend independent publishing (self publishing).

Paul LaR oche, Founder Of Brule, Receiving the book The Peace Seed from Ronda Del Boccio On His Birthday in Branson, Missouri

For one thing, it's not just "vanity presses" like there used to be. There are nice, legitimate, affordable (even FREE) ways to publish a book.

Examples of print publishers:

  • CreateSpace
  • LuLu

Examples of digital publishing services:

Those are just examples. There are many more.

Oh, how I love guest blogging! Nice way to bring fresh voices. Here's a guest post by Alessandra Macaluso to inspire you to publish a book now.

Writers: What's Stopping You?

Guest post by Alessandra Macaluso

Writers: do you have an idea for a book in mind? Have you already finished it? Maybe you’ve sent your manuscript out into the black hole of publishing companies, waiting to hear an answer – any answer – even it if is the dreaded “Thank you for your inquiry; however we are not accepting new author’s at this time.” Or maybe you are toying around with the idea of self-publishing your work.

There are no shortages of examples of self-publishing success. For instance, “50 Shades of Gray” was self-published. You don’t need me to convey the success of that series to make the point that not only is it possible to self-publish, but that you can actually pioneer your writing career with this method.

According to a Bowker Report published in October of 2012, “The number of self-published books produced annually in the U.S. has nearly tripled, growing 287 percent since 2006, and now tallies more than 235,000 print and ‘e’ titles.”

When it comes to deciding between a large publishing company, and self-publishing, the writing is on the wall.

And guess what? Even if your book is picked up by a large publishing house, you are still expect to hit the ground running and do your own promotional legwork. If you are going to have to do it anyway, why not own the rights to your work and make a larger profit from your sales?

Other Things to Consider

The downside to self-publishing is that you are on your own financially until you can start profiting from your book sales. Large publishers often pay authors an “advance” to get the book started. But in the case of self-publishing, there are no advances. But you do have tools at your disposal.

For example, there is Kickstarter, the online “crowd funding” tool that allows you to create a campaign for your project and have others fund it for you. Some have been able to quit their day jobs and devote their undivided time and energy this way, getting a project off the ground before any profits come rolling in.

Or, you can do things the old fashioned way: come home from your day job, put a large pot of coffee on, and burn the midnight oil for months on end until your story makes its way onto paper. It takes a unique blend of time, passion, and a little bit of crazy to write a book. And my hunch is that if you are truly a passionate writer, you’ll choose the latter.

In short, you no longer need access to a large publishing house to publish your book. Now, all you need is an idea, some time, and a computer to get your writing down. With the endless options to explore to self-publish your book, there is literally no one stopping you. So I just have one question: what are you waiting for?

How to Write a Book: Who Is Your Ideal Reader?

How to write a book is more than merely typing letters and clicking save. It’s important to know your ideal customer so well that you speak directly to her. Here’s how!

How to Write a Book: Who Is Your Ideal Reader?

(This article was originally posted to the National Association of Baby Boomer Women, to which I am a Contributing Associate.

Proud Associate of NABBW - National Association of Baby Boomer Women

As an author mentor, I attract poetry and fiction authors as well as nonfiction authors. Truly, any author needs to think like an entrepreneur and develop an entrepreneur mindset, because there is more to writing the book than simply writing and publishing.

The big question of how to write a book is bigger than writing!

One of the biggest stumbling blocks that causes my students to fall and skin their knees is getting to know your ideal reader.

Who is your ideal reader?

Knowing your audience is key. Here are just a few questions to get you thinking. These work no matter what you write (fiction, poetry, nonfiction):

  • Who is my ideal reader?
  • Where does she live (not only city VS rural, but what kind of dwelling, with whom)?
  • What are her hopes and fears?
  • Where does she hang out?
  • What motivates her?
  • What does she crave?

I started my own journey as a fiction writer. Creating a character sketch is something I brought into my entrepreneurial world from fiction writing. I'm really a fantasy author at heart!

Character Sketch

Doing a character sketch for your ideal reader is the same ideas as crafting one for a character in a novel or story. Simply a different application.

Here is how well cozy mystery novelist Susan Santangelo knows her audience: These quotes are all from an article she wrote for a blog tour, posted on the National Association of Baby Boomer Women blog. See the original article source.

The subtitle for all the book titles is: “Every Wife Has A Story.”

I write about situations that thousands of Boomers, especially women, identify with.

At least, that’s what my readers tell me.

Many women have contacted me to say that I’m writing their lives, and wonder when I’ve met their husband. Hmm. Gotta think about that one.

She clearly writes directly to the understanding of that perfect reader, a boomer wife.

MCBM

Susan writes a Baby Boomer mystery series, which thus far has these books:

Another important aspect of Susan's ideal reader is she is a dog lover. She knows this and incorporates it into the series. Here is what Susan says about her dog:

You’ll see my muse and partner in crime, Boomer (get it?), my three-year-old very spoiled English cocker spaniel, who’s the cover model for the books.

In the series, Carol and Jim Andrews have two English cocker spaniels, Lucy and Ethel. Boomer doesn’t like posing as girls, but he works cheap. A few dog biscuits and he’s a happy guy.

Boomer

If you are a boomer man or a college student, these books may not be as appealing to you, and that's fine. They're written for boomers.

Hanging out with your ideal audience can inspire! Here's how Susan found her latest book idea:

I recently attended my high school reunion. Had a great time. And as I looked around at my classmates, I wondered what secrets they were all hiding. And if any of those secrets could lead to…murder.

And I decided to write the next book in my series about a high school reunion. None of the book’s characters are based on anyone in my class. Honestly.

* * *

Oh sure…right! (wink)

True confession from Ronda: While I don't duplicate real people, I have to admit that some people who have annoyed me have lived up to a saying on a shirt I own:

“Careful or you'll be a villain in my next story!”

But I digress.

When you get it right, you will receive comments like the ones Susan says she gets so often: “Many women have contacted me to say that I’m writing their lives, and wonder when I’ve met their husband.”

Lightning

bolts strike hard,

sulfur-smelling,

Grandfather Oak wrent.

Shredded trunk and branches,

Centuries torn asumder.

Insides out and outsides under,

Bearing his secrets, sharing his truth

Even in death, Oak has more to bestow.

Storm’s bequest ensured in devastation

Wind-born treasures carried in the squall

Alight to grow in death's embrace

Sky fire strike, a death to one.

Inspirational Thoughts on Knowing Your Value: Would You Do This For Nothing?

A conversation sparked these inspirational thoughts on value. How would you respond to this query? Check out the article and decide.

Inspirational Thoughts on Knowing Your Value: Would You Do This For Nothing?

by Ronda Del Boccio

A recent conversation inspired me to share these thoughts on value.

Value yourself - Miracle Mindshift Month

Please do this  –  but we won't pay you.

A friend of mine asked me if I would run the webinar technology for a highly successful entrepreneur he knows.

He didn't want my expertise as an author, mentor, speaker, or entrepreneur. He did not want me to facilitate the conversation or interview the panel of experts.

The webinar in question has nothing to do with the focus of my business, or with my life purpose. (My business is perfectly aligned with my purpose.)

He only wanted me to be there to do a task I would hire out rather than do myself. My thought was to outsource this to a reliable friend I know who does such things.

And heaping yet more insult, the businessman facilitating the call didn't want to pay for the skill of having someone run the tech, even though he can well afford a few bucks to hire the help.

I was actually FURIOUS!

Running a webinar panel is indeed a skill. And even if I were to be the laborer for this, why should I not be compensated? I've long since paid my dues and learned how to steward my time and skills.

Why would I spend 2 hours volunteering my time to a high income earner who can afford to pay rather than doing something that would make me money or otherwise please me?

No. I have skills. I have value. You do not have permission to use or abuse me.

How does this relate to you?

This encounter made me think of YOU, because all too often, I see my mentoring students do things outside your skills and comfort just because someone asked.

Sure, I love bartering, and I love helping a friend, but I am really sick and tired of people trying to take advantage and get something for nothing.

After that, this same person suggested I offer coaching (which I don't do since I'm an author mentor, not a coach) for a ridiculously low rate.

I was so insulted. It's clear I've had a major SHIFT !

Get Started Today and SAVE with this Miracle Mindshift Special Offer!

Mark Twain Inspirational Quotes for Authors: Write for Critical Acclaim or for My Ideal Readers?

Mark Twain has inspirational quotes to help even the authors of today. Where do you put your focus: on good reviews from critics, or book sales and comments from readers? This post will inspire you.

Mark Twain Inspirational Quotes for Authors: Write for Critical Acclaim or for Readers?

Some advice is ageless and timeless. Mark Twain has some inspirational quotes that can help the authors of today.

Thumbnail for version as of 05:20, 12 January 2005

Any author considering how to write a book can get caught up in seeking the prestige of critical praise for your book, such as being featured in prestigious lists, praised in a newspaper review, or touted as one of the best books of the year.

I found an excellent “on this day” post on The Writers Almanac with Garrison Keillor that made me think of you.

Because on this day in 1864, one of Mark Twain's most famous book was published, and the major newspapers of the time were not at all pleased with it. I never knew it was even banned by one library.

Mark Twain's experience with his book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn provides an excellent example of who your REAL critic needs to be.

Please read this short passage from The Writers Almanac :

Although it was a big seller and got great reviews in England, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn got poor reviews in America.

A San Francisco paper said that it was dreary, and "nor is it [a book] that most parents who want a future of promise for their young folks would select without some hesitation."

  • A Boston paper said that it was "so flat, as well as coarse, that nobody wants to read it";
  • another that it was "pitched in one key, and that is the key of a vulgar and abhorrent life";
  • and a New York paper that it was "cheap and pernicious stuff."
  • In 1885, it was banned by the public library of Concord, Massachusetts, and Louisa May Alcott explained, "If Mr. Clemens cannot think of something better to tell our pure-minded lads and lasses, he had best stop writing for them."

But Twain said, "The public is the only critic whose judgment is worth anything at all."

Three months after Huck Finn was published, in early May of 1864, Webster had sold 51,000 copies of the book, and as of today, an estimated 20 million copies have been sold.

(See original source for this quotation)

What can I learn from the Mark Twain inspirational quotes?

I hope you will write your book with these things in mind:

  • What does my reader desire?
  • What will make my reader's life better?
  • How can I give my reader an amazing experience?

When you do that well, your reader will share how much better her life is, or how awesome the story was with all her friends.

THAT is what you truly want, because people who matter –  your ideal readers –  telling their friends and contacts how awesome your advice or your story is will carry your message into many more hearts and lives than a few reviews.

How Can Guest Blogging Help Me Develop My Author Voice?

This entry is part 3 of 5 in the series Blogging

Being a successful book author means more than writing a book. It means reaching your ideal reader and developing your author’s voice. Guest Blogging is one way to do this. There’s even a contest in which you can win $1,000!

How Can Guest Blogging Help Me Develop My Author Voice?

by Ronda Del Boccio

Blogging on your own site is important, yet it's not always easy. Sometimes a blogger may feel stumped for new ideas or stuck in a rut.

Another important aspect of writing in whatever format is developing your author's voice.

Developing your voice comes from DOING –

Creating materials

  • writing –  including flyers, articles, emails, social posts, and ultimately books
  • speaking – such as videos, interviews speaking engagements

Interacting with prospects and readers/customers

  • answering questions – whether written or spoken
  • conversations – with readers and prospects

Are you speaking into empty space?

Being a book author is about much more than simply writing and publishing a book.

An expert in energy, whom I will call Justin, said, “I want to be a speaker.” He wrote a book and published it. He began marketing the book. He looked for speaking engagements, yet he found few organizations who wanted him.

Where did Justin go wrong?

He had put out his book “in a vacuum.”

  • He did not research who is the ideal reader/customer for him.
  • He did not solve a specific problem in h is nonfiction book.
  • He spoke to his passions but not to a need.

If justin knew more about his ideal reader and the questions and problems this person wanted solved, he would make better progress.

One way to get to know your ideal readers is to ENGAGE with them. This is much easier done where there is already a conversation happening.

How Guest Blogging Helps Develop Your VOICE

Guest blogging is an excellent way to develop your voice because you are:

  • writing for an already-established audience (that of the blog on which you are a guest blogger)
  • writing for your ideal reader (assuming you have chosen the right blogs)
  • speaking to issues or concerns those readers have (based on your post being requested and approved)
  • developing your style, metaphors, and language

Back to Justin, if he had been getting to know his audience by interacting with them and by guest blogging, he would be better able to speak to what they want to hear and develop his voice as a writer (and public speaker)

How to Write a Book: Do Your Chapter Titles Sizzle or Stink?

When authors consider how to write a book, one of the orphan children is the chapter titles. If a browser finds your title and cover tantalizing enough, the next port of call is the table of contents. Ho-hum chapter titles turn away your potential sale. Get help crafting scintilating chapter titles in this article.

How to Write a Book: Do Your Chapter Titles Sizzle or Stink?

by Ronda Del Boccio

When someone is one of my mentoring students, I ask to look through their book before they publish. I'm looking  for things like:

  • book title
  • book subtitle
  • cover
  • back cover material
  • endorsements and testimonials
  • stories
  • book structure
  • optin
  • call to action

My observation is that the chapter titles are the orphan children of the book. The author gets caught up in the content of the book, but forgets that before a potential buyer reads a word, she's likely to first read the table of contents.

I remember helping my friend and student Lasse Rouhiainen with his first book, Smart Social Media. He said, “I never thought much about the chapter titles until you pointed them out to me.” Most of his did their job well, but I helped him add some hot sauce to a few.

It's ok to have boring chapter titles ONLY to keep them as placeholders. Go back and spice them up before you publish.

Copywriters often spend a large amount of time on headlines and subheads, which are their equivalent of the book title and chapter titles.

Model your own chapter titles after successful books. The 4–Hour Workweek is one excellent example. Here is an image showing some of the chapter titles from the book:

Three Things NOT to Do when Crafting Chapter Titles

Here's some helpful guidance about chapter titles from another article.

How to Write a Book: Writing Chapter Titles that Turn Browsers into Buyers

by Ronda Del Boccio, NABBW's Entrepreneurial Authoring Expert

One of the most neglected considerations for how to write a book is the chapter titles. Yet perusing chapter titles is a critical step a book browser makes when deciding whether or not to buy a book.

If the front and back cover (or cover and book description online) make the browser look inside the book, guess what they’ll see first?

That’s right, the chapter titles!

So here are 3 things NOT TO DO as you write your chapter titles.

  1. DO NOT overlook the importance of the chapter titles. A potential buyer takes 4 steps before making their decision: front cover, back cover, chapter titles, and a peek inside.
  2. DO NOT be boring. “The ABCs of design” is a boring title. Even a chapter title should make you want to know what the chapter will convey.
  3. DO NOT shrink. Be bold. Write captivating titles that arrest the reader’s attention.

Three Things TO Do when Crafting Chapter Titles

  1. Look at the table of contents' of books and make note of those which ignite your curiosity. Another excellent model for chapter titles is YES by Robert Cialdini.
  2. Think like a copywriter. Take inspiration from Prevention magazine or The National Inquirer. .They KNOW how to grab attention.
  3. Sell the Sizzle. Titles should make you want to read more. Fascinate the reader and she'll click the buy now button.

This video shows the principles in action, using The 4–Hour Workweek as an example:

Watch the video now.

Put some spark into your chapter titles and you can turn browsers into buyers.

What Can Jeff Foxworthy Teach Authors about Storytelling Techniques and Ideas?

Thanks to and his redneck humor, you can get both a laugh and a little inspriration to find the humor in your everyday life. Find storytelling ideas everywhere, from a trip to the store to a wedding rehearsal dinner. Get storytelling techniques/b> and tips in this article.

What  Can Jeff Foxworthy Teach Authors about Storytelling Techniques and Ideas?

by Ronda Del Boccio

It seems people don't truly believe me when I say there are storytelling ideas everywhere. Comedians and country singers know this well.

storytelling techniques

Entrepreneurs come to me for help with how to write a book; One of the key elements that belongs in every chapter of a nonfiction book is a story.

The story may come from:

  • a customer success story
  • a restaurant visit
  • a conversation
  • a news story
  • something overheard
  • any life experience

Storytelling ideas are everywhere,

Recently, Kara asked, “How can I find a story for every chapter? I'm not a good storyteller.”

Before addressing the storytelling issue, pause and look at the mindset. as Kara repeats she's not good at something, she demonstrates storytelling techniques used to hold her back.

She probably has a whole narrative around not being a good storyteller and not being able to find good ideas. It becomes a well-worn pathway of the mind.

Looking for inspiration

Kara can find storytelling ideas anywhere in her life. Fiction authors know this well, because any event or person can inspire a story element.

as a fantasy author, I personally have used bits of conversation, people, and real life experiences as fodder for stories.

Why is nonfiction any different? It isn't!

Jeff Foxworthy finds his inspiration in everyday life. He is a master storyteller.

Watch this Jeff Foxworthy video.and see if you can find some inspiration for yourself.

Here are a few of the situations that inspired him for this comedy routine:

  • a wedding rehearsal dinner
  • lawn ornaments
  • hunting
  • visiting relatives
  • rednecks (of course!)

3 elements of storytelling

  1. Content – the “what happened”: Most people stop here and merely repeat “this happened, then that, then the next thing.” This makes for a boring story.
  2.  Context – the “fit” or relevance to the reader/listener: This is why the story matters to your audience.
  3. Connection – the “why this matters” emotion. The story needs to matter to your audience on an emotional level, whether the story is humorous or serious.

What can Jeff Foxworthy teach about good storytelling techniques?

Can Storytelling Techniques Help Develop a Powerful Mindset?

I love the orange juice commercials that show someone getting “bad news” about things typically viewed as unpleasant that will happen today. I love them because they are such a great example of how storytelling techniques can help or hinder you. It all depends upon the story you choose to tell. Click to find out more.

Can Storytelling Techniques Help Develop a Powerful Mindset?

Check out storytelling techniques in action by remembering the thoughts that run around inside your head. These might be thoughts about:

  • The economy
  • Business
  • Your love life
  • Your kids
  • Your partner
  • The job market
  • Losing weight
  • Breaking a bad habit

Whatever thoughts run around inside your head are your own storytelling techniques in action!

People are constantly telling themselves stories about the day. A musician just complained to me that he is having a hard times getting gigs (jobs) because of the current leader of his country. What the  WHAT???

Catch yourself telling stories about your life.

What story do you tell yourself about things that happen?

Imagine you have a day in which these things happen:

  • the delivery boy throws your newspaper into the bushes; plus the sprinkler is on. Your paper is drenched and unreadable.
  • A computer virus wipes out your entire hard drive.
  • Your tire blows out on the way to a big meeting and you have to walk miles. And it's raining hard.
  • Your child continues to give you the silent treatment for no apparent reason.

The typical response one might imagine for each of these is some version of “oh NO!” (with or without cuss words).

Eeyore (from the Winnie the Pooh series) comes to mind. He complains that things like that always happen to him. Here's one of the great Eeyore quotes:

Nobody tells me. Nobody keeps me informed. I make it 17 days come Friday since anyone spoke to me.

A series of orange juice commercials catches my ear, because they are a fantastic mindset lesson.

When the person who is going to have a series of “bad” things happen in a day, his or her response is “perfect!” (said with enthusiasm, not sarcasm)  rather than dread.

Here is one of those orange juice commercials:

Watch the video now.

Perception Shapes Reality

There is no “set response” to a thing happening.

Here is my version of responding to a “bad day” with positive expectancy and a great mindset:

Imagine I'm looking into a crystal ball that predicts my day…

Crystal Ball: “Your website will be down for six hours.

Me: “Excellent! Right after I send my customers a special coupon?”

Crystal Ball: “Yep.”

Me: “Perfect! Anything else?”

Crystal Ball: “The order button link will not work for no apparent reason.”

Me: “Great! And I'll spend several hours trying to track down the problem, right?”

Crystal Ball: “Sure will.”

Me “Good thing I had my mindshift!”

Use storytelling techniques to aft a powerful story

1. Catch your typical story running in your mind.

2. Decide the more positive, profitable story you wish to tell yourself.

3. Write down that new beneficial story

4. Rehearse saying it often.

5. Join the Miracle Mindshift Month and transform your mindset in just 31 days.

Entrepreneur Mindset for Authors: Ready for Adventure?

Do you have an entrepreneur mindset? This fun photo of some guinea hens ready to go in the car if we’d just open the door for them is a wonderful representation of the openness and courage required for any author to enjoy success.

Entrepreneur Mindset for Authors: Ready for Adventure?

by Ronda Del Boccio

Once I had a dream that a company in Minneapolis offered me a job paying $150 thousand per year with excellent benefits. Although this is much more than many people make, I turned down the offer.

I told my mother and her husband about this dream. He said, “You should have taken it. Why would you turn that down? You're crazy!”

Funny how he got so emotionally invested in my decision in a dream.

When is a dream a nightmare?

A cushy salary and benefits sounds like a good thing, right? But there are trade-offs with any decision.

I would have to work 60+ hours and would have nothing like what I would consider quality of life.

  • Why have money and no time to spend it?
  • Why have to ask “how high?” when someone else says “JUMP”?
  • Why give up freedom just for supposed comfort?

For me, a cushy salary and benefits would not be comfortable if I had to work for someone else. I truly have an entrepreneur mindset!

Like my guinea hens in this picture, I am ready for adventure. Are you?

Entrepreneur Mindset: Ready for Adventure?

Why develop an entrepreneur mindset?

Here are some reasons why you as an author of any format may find it beneficial to develop an entrepreneurial mindset.

  • Just writing does not get your work out into the world.
  • Just publishing a book is not a success guarantee.
  • There is more to being a successful author than posting about your book in social networks.
  • You are not likely to find a salaried position with benefits as an author.
  • You're probably a free spirit anyway!

How to Develop an Entrepreneur Mindset

Here are some actions you can take to become more business minded without selling your writer's soul.

  1. Set lifelines (most people call them deadlines) for yourself even though nobody is looking over your shoulder.
  2. Reward yourself for reaching your lifelines and for making great progress.
  3. Celebrate every success –  whether that is the sale of an article, surpassing a goal, winning an award, the completion of a chapter, or your first book sale.
  4. Expect a miracle! Things don't have to happen slowly or in stepwise progression.  Open yourself to be AMAZED on a daily basis, and you will discover your mind, heart and spirit opening to bigger ideas and greater BLISS!

Writing Skills Help: How Can You Improve Your Writing WITHOUT Writing?

Writing a good book worth reading is more than how you write the book. Other skills come into play, including copywriting and persuasion.

If this seems confusing or irrelevant, consider the power of these aspects of a book:

  • Title
  • Subtitle
  • Back cover content
  • Book description on Amazon or other bookseller sites
  • Content on author's site/blog about the book

Every author needs to either develop copywriting skills or hire it done, and hiring a good copywriter can be an expensive venture for someone just starting out with your book and platform.

This article by David Deutsch teaches how to become a better copywriter before you begin writing:

Improve Your Copywriting—without Writing a Word by David Deutsch Copywriting is about being persuasive

So if you want to get better at copywriting, practice being persuasive. In person as well as in print.

Practice convincing your friends, family and business associates to try a particular food, accompany you somewhere, watch a certain show, or just to do “A” rather than “B”.

Notice what works.  Notice what doesn’t.  How do you deal with objections? How do you lay the groundwork for persuasion (bonding, getting them into an agreeable mood)? How do you “close the sale”?

Not doing too well? Read up on salesmanship and persuasion.

If you’re really serious about copywriting and you’ve never done it before, get a second job for a week or two in a telemarketing center, selling door-to-door, helping out in a retail store, or selling anything face-to-face.

When have a copywriting assignment, practice “selling” people on the product or service you’re writing about.

Can you get them interested in it? Interested enough to buy it?

Keep refining your ability to “sell” the product or service in person and you’ll be far more able to sell it on the page.

And your copywriting skills will soar.

Hen In Snow

Talons

by Ronda Del Boccio

We instinctively feel the danger. We cackle and run under the nearest bush, tree or shelter where death cannot take us. From my hiding place, I look at the empty yard. Relief! Nobody will die today.

Peeping in the tall grass. The babies! I rush toward them, cover them with my body and wings.

Hawk soars down, down, down. Big sharp talons stretched to kill. I will give my life for the babies.

Heavy weight lands on me, flies away. I feel a harsh prick. Stunned, I cannot move. Peeping from below rouses me.

I live! Hawk hunts.
