7 Ways to Promote Your Live Author Event with Ease

Live author events, whether a book signing, reading, speaking engagement or something else, can be tremendously valuable...or not. It all depends. Mostly, it depends on the AUTHOR, not the event host.

I've noticed a lot of authors tend to expect to sit back and let the literary world deliver book sales with no effort on the wordsmith's part. I see it with publishing and with live events as well.

7 Tips for Promoting an Author Event

When you publish a book by whatever publishing method, you an't expect to put up your feet and let the publisher promote for you This simply does not happen. You can't just bury yourself in the next project; you have to promote and market your own book. That makes everybody happy, because you sell more books.

Same with events. Just because you've agreed to appear at a book signing, excerpt reading, or other live author event, that doesn't mean you keep your mouth shut about it and simply show up and sit in  your seat like a soggy lump until you're "on."

You want a successful event, right?

5 Reasons Why You Want to Help Promote an Author Book Signing/Speaking Event

  1. You might sell more books. This is obvious, but worth focused attention. People who are connected to you, whether readers, family or friends, are likely to come in support, and/or perhaps buy a book for themselves or as a gift. Sales are all about numbers. The more people attend, the more statistically likely it is for you to profit.
  2. Name recognition. Every author needs a wider net with more people who know about you and your books. Even if I don't like your genre, I have friends who do, and those friends are always looking for a good read. The old saying goes, "Out of sight, out of mind." You want to be IN sight and ON people's minds. Every time someone sees your name and hears about you, you become just a little more relevant.
  3. You only reap what you sow. You'll only get out what you invest. Contribute nothing and you can expect nothing in return. Then you'll be whining that the event was a waste of time when you, in fact, were at cause in the poor results. Help spread the word and you'll be the darling of the event hosts and can anticipate rich rewards.
  4. The Golden Rule Principle. Momma taught you the Golden Rule: "Treat others as you want them to treat you." The others are the event planners, any other authors, and the attendees. You want a great experience for everyone. The success of any event is a team effort. You want to care t the success of the event not only to bolster your own self-interest, but because it is right to put forth some effort. The event coordinators are most assuredly expending many hours and much energy to support YOUR writing.
  5. What you focus upon expands. Focus on expanding siness as an author and it shall grow. Simple universal law.

  • Put only the first book in a series into KDP Select.
  • OR enroll a book for 3 months then take it out.

  • Remember you can exclude a KDP Select title from KU by following the procedure

I encountered author and social media Frances Caballo through her podcast of the same name. It's short, useful, and straight to the point. Based on that, I hadhigh expectations of her book. I'm happy to report that she did not disappoint. I'd recommend listening to it. Here's the link.

Warning - this book COULD overwhelm you. It's not one of those how-to books  you'll want to read cover to cover. There is a LOT of info. It's like the writer's social media desk reference, teaching the networks, tools and helpful hints and tricks to master them.

With a table of contents several pages long, this will no doubt be clear to you right away. But fear not, because each chapter is broken down into nice "bite-sized" pieces.

The only thing I worry about with this book is that you'll be so inundated with the various tools, planners etc that you throw your hands up in the air and stick your head in the sand.

That said, it's an essential reference. You'll get not merely an overview of the various social networks and the tools to manage them, but  guidance on how to make the most of all of it. Nobody can predict which tools YOU will prefer, but with the listing and descriptions, you can check things out and make your best decisions.

Don't try to be in all networks. Pick one and get used to it, then branch out from there.

Writing a Novel: After the First Draft

THis month I #amrevising  my #wip   They All Died Smiling

As I go through the book start to finish, I'm so happy with where it went. No huge blunders. Yay!

Looking for ways to enrich scenes. When I write dialogue-heavy scenes, I often just write the words. Now, the #editing  phase, is when I go back and add gestures or other details.

I also read through for consistency, pacing, and character development.

I found a little pacing error that was easily enough fixed. I didn't want Kassidy catching on to something right away, but her intuition had to start nagging at her a bit.

So that's my update for They all Died Smiling!

Book Marketing tips: Authors: Why Use Hashtags?

I've noticed a lot of confusion among my author friends about hashtags. What are they really? Should I bother with them? Are they important? So here's the 411 on hashtags for authors.

What are hashtags?

They're an organizational tool.  Put the hashtag into any social network and you're instantly taken to a list of posts using that hashtag. They are clickable links. Search #cookierecipes #HistNovel  or #BookMarketingTips, or something relevant to your writing..

Hashtags For Authors

Are Hashtags only for Twitter?

No. Go into Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Tumblr, Google+...any of them...and see what happens when you use one.

Why Hashtags for Authors?

They make it easy for you to target your material and also to connect with other readers. Posting

  • If you write young adult novels, #YaLit is a good tag for you.
  • If you write paranormal romance, use #paranormalromance when you post.

Connecting with Readers by Genre & Interest

  • Put the hashtag into search that represents your genre, such as #MGLit for middle grade literature.
  • Put a term relating to the topic or interest of your book, such as #Scotland, #Baking, etc..

Here's an example. Sorchia DuBois wrote Just Like Gravity, an awesome #ParanormalRomance about #reincarnation taking place in Scotland featuring #LaPhroaig Whiskey. She can use those hashtags to connect with readers by both genre and interest.
